Excerpt from Art in America: A Critical and Historical Sketch The aim of this book has been. To give a historical outline of the growth of the arts in America. But while this has been the dominating idea in the mind of the writer, criticism has necessarily entered, more or less, into the preparation of the work, since only by weighing the differ ences or the comparative merits of those artists who seemed best to illus trate the various phases of American art has it been possible to trace its progress from one step to another. It is from no lack of appreciation of their talents that the author has apparently neglected mention of the American artists resident in foreign capitals - like Bridgman, Duveneck, Wight, Neal, Bacon, Benson, Ernest Parton, Millet, Whistler, Dana, Blashfield, Miss Gardner, Miss Conant, and many others who have done credit to American aesthetic culture. But it was necessary to draw the line somewhere; and to discuss what our artists are painting abroad would have at once enlarged the scope of the work beyond the limits of the plan adopted. Excerpt from American Painting Today Every book which has an innate significance, seems simple because hard work and inspiration have eliminated all unessential material. The idea for this book was an outgrowth of many dynamic discussions held by the Artists for Victory, during World War II. One of these discussions gave rise to a plan to help the creative artists in this country to recognition. It was this concept of awakening the public to the high quality of the work of our artists which gave rise to the idea of a Library of Creative American Art, initiated by this volume. It was not the intent in such a library to establish what might be called an American Style inasmuch as style at its best, is an unconscious quality springing from the beliefs and emotional responses of the individual artist. Indeed, the whole world of today is a source of inspiration to the creative artist. He may be influenced by American Colonial art, by the modern developments in Europe, by Primitive Negro sculpture, by the art of the South Sea Islands or the paintings of India, Iran or Japan. Thus, the paintings reproduced here cover a wide range of expression from the sincere realism of John Sloan to the so-called pure abstractionism of Joseph Albers. In selecting work for reproduction in this book, it was decided that a committee of eminent Museum Directors from many sections of the coun try would be best qualified to make intelligent choices. This decision was in harmony with what a well-known Chicago critic once said, It is for the museum to hunt out the new talent and to invite it, on the basis of a catholic taste and rigorous standards The excellent, in the deepest meaning of that word, is what we are after in speaking of new talent; it will never be found by mass methods. However, since no selection of art by any jury or similar group, however able its members, can ever be wholly objective, the controversial nature of our selections must be recognized as well as the fact that the work of certain deserving artists may very well have been overlooked.
