The changing conditions of life, both social and economic, seem to call for a readjustment in our high-school procedure. This call will be more insistent as time goes on, and the school which fails to heed the call will find itself relegated to a position of subordinate importance as a determining factor in social and economic affairs. Conceding, to the utmost, the influence of colleges of education and normal schools in the way of inculcating better methods of teaching, there still remains much for high-school teachers, themselves, to do in the way of taking a generous survey of their work so as to give direction and potency to civilization. Tradition, alone, will not avail. The high school should lead, not follow; but this high function will not be attained until it can preview civilization and prepare the way. This privilege appertains to each individual teacher, nor can this function be either abrogated or delegated. Excerpt from The High School Algebra, Vol. 1 IN issuing a new edition of the high school algebra, part I., the Authors desire to express their appreciation of the favor with which their work has been received, and which has rendered a reprint a necessity. For the convenience of both teachers and students the new edition retains not only the matter of the first edition, but also the numbering of the Articles and Exercises unchanged and the pages unbroken. A few additions have been made to the text, a few examples have been changed, and a considerable number of new examples have been inserted at the end of the book. These new examples will be found to require a moderate amount of intelligent thought for their solution, but difficult or complicated work has not been introduced. They are chiefly applications Of algebraical princi ples rather than mere symbolical transformations. Experience has shown that the most valuable exercises are those in which the student is required to translate statements of fact, expressed in ordinary language, into the language of symbols, to perform the necessary Operations, and finally to interpret the result. Such work can be performed only by students to whom the symbols both of quantity and operation have a definite meaning. In pursuance of this idea many of the examples are of a geometrical character, but are well within the powers of the average intelligent student. The order in which they are placed is frequently worthy of attention. Sometimes one or more simple examples lead to the solution of a more difficult one of the same character. Sometimes a succession of values is given to an element Of a problem for the purpose of exhibiting a contrast in the results. The careful study of such groups will be found instructive and profitable. The answers have been designedly omitted. Many of the examples are of such a character that their chief value would be lost by the student seeing the result. In other cases the verification of the result Obtained is easily made, and is a valuable additional exercise. Excerpt from Making a High School Program The public is devoting more and more of its treasure to the school, particularly to the high school. The high school principal has a responsibility for the economy and efficiency of his school organization. Care and economy mean more funds for education. We might raise salaries on what is now wasted. In industry, with rising labor costs has come greater attention to individual economies. The school cannot escape the tendency. Does the high school principal know whether or not he is getting full efficiency from his organization? Is the work evenly divided? Are teachers overworked or underworked? Are pupil divisions evenly constructed? Are program difficulties solved? The high school principal needs in his equipment the engineers capacity. He is an educational engineer. The high school program, indeed, is an engineering problem. No system of making a high school program on the trial-and-error method is defensible. From mathematical reasons it must be faulty. No purely mechanical method of making a program is adequate, for the result is wrong and the pupils and teachers are the necessary victims. A high school program must be scientifically constructed if it is to be accepted as adequate to the situation presented. Poor high school programs are responsible today for great waste of money in the employment of unnecessary teachers, in the uneven distribution of work, in preventing pupils' range of choice of subjects, and in unnecessary worry and confusion throughout the organization. The professionally trained high school principal can easily find a way out of the program difficulties. The struggle against this universal problem has developed some program geniuses, and their discoveries are not esoteric but open and free to those who wish to adopt their ideas.
