After outlining the history of the struggle for freedom of expression in Cuba from the 19th century to Castro's assumption of power, the author details how that freedom has been systematically curtailed under the Castro regime. Separate chapters are devoted to the stifling of freedom in journalism and to Castro's drive to harness artistic creation as a servant of ideology. The author illustrates his account of the regulation of culture by providing case studies of the persecution of two intellectuals, both dissident Marxists, who ran afoul of Castro's cult of personality.
