Book Description
Excerpt from The Heart of the Furnace And now he was in prison, awaiting trial. Well, whatever he had done, his conscience was clean; no body should argue him out of that. Hadn't he had time to think it over, to think it all out? Weeks and weeks in gaol? And now he was to come to trial. To-day. Well, he would tell them. Broido had de served it, he had deserved all he got, the dirty swine that he had turned out to be. His friend, yet all the time a dirty swine. What could they do to a blind man? It was an accident, how could it be anything else? They must see that. Of course he hadn't meant to do him in. 'mad? No, I wasn't mad, he said, unless something in me was. Some swift ferocity, uncontrollable. He hadn't meant to do him in. He had told them the truth, he would tell the judge the truth to-day. Per haps the judge would only send him back to the workshop. But if he didn't? Well, what was the dif ference, he said in his hopelessness, between prison and workshop for a blind man? Very little. No, a lot. He would be cut off from voices, nobody to listen to, nobody to talk to, not even Broido. Broido his friend. No voices in the. Prison, no sounds of any sort. He would have nothing. He would just be able to make out where the window was, he could make out where the window was now by standing under it and turn ing his face up to the light - he supposed there were bars across the window. Funny having bars across the window and locking the door to keep a blind man in. Funny locking doors on anyone, one man lock-ing a door on another. No, the Workshop would be much better; he Would hear the men talking, Richards, Meiring, even Broido. Surely the judge would send him back. Book Description
Excerpt from The Furnace of Iron I wonder what the young man will be like? Mused Aunt Esther, who prided herself on the prae tical outlook she took of Life. She was thinking as she cut out her flannel petticoats that through the efforts of this prospective convert she and her sister might alone enjoy, the uplifting triumph of all mighty Islam's overthrow. George Carlyon wrote apprising them of a young Egyptian's arrival in London to study various branches of exact science in order in due time to instruct his brethren. He is a presentable young fellow and well'connected. Be kind to him, as he is a total stranger to the roaring metropolis, and you may teach him a little that he doesn't know yet and keep him out of trouble. His people hold me responsible for his reception and I dare not disappoint them. He is, I believe, very clever when he chooses to work. His religion is already yielding to the blandishments of education, I fancy, and he may end by turning Christian. Do you feel inclined to try your hand on him? Whatever happens he is well worth the trouble. His course is for two years. I have given him an introduction to you which he will soon present in person. Try conversion if you like, but at any rate be kind to him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
“My heart is a lonely hunter that hunts on a lonely hill.” “The heart has reason that reason cannot know.” “The more I get to know President Putin, the more I get to see his heart and soul.” The heart not only drives our physical life, but throughout human history it has also been viewed at the seat of our deepest emotions. It has figured hugely—if metaphorically—in nearly every aspect of human civilization and as the unending subject of literature, music, and art. Yet until now there has not been a study of this paramount icon of love. Ole Høystad ably fills this enormous gap with a fascinating investigation into this locus of grief, joy, and power. Firmly positioning the heart at the metaphorical and literal center of human culture and history, Høystad weaves history, myth, and science together into a compelling narrative. He combs through religions and philosophies from the beginning of civilization to explore such disparate historical points as the Aztec ritual of removing the still-beating heart from a living sacrificial victim and offering it to the gods; homosexuality and the heart in Greek antiquity; European attempts to employ alchemy in service of the mysteries of love; and the connections between the heart and wisdom in Sufism. Høystad charts how the heart has signified our essential desires, whether for love and passion in the medieval excesses of troubadour poetry and chivalric idealism, the body-soul dualism propounded by the Enlightenment, or even the modern notions of individualism expressed in the works of such thinkers as Nietzsche, Foucault, and Joseph Campbell. A provocative examination of the deepest vaults of our souls and the efforts of the many lonely hunters who have tried to unlock its secrets, A History of Heart upends the clichés to reveal a symbol of our fundamental humanity whose beats can be felt in every aspect of our lives. “A History of the Heart is about far more than the changing representation of the most charismatic organ. The ease with which the central storyline opens into a wide-ranging intellectual history of Western culture is the book's chief delight and major achievement. . . . A beautifully presented volume.”—Times Higher Education Supplement
