Excerpt from Kansas As far as it has been found possible, the geography of Kansas as presented in this small volume has received causal treatment, a distinguishing feature of the series of which it is a supplementary volume. Emphasis has been placed on the industries of the state and on the industries of different parts of the state. These industries - agriculture, manufacturing, and commerce - depend very largely on the physiographic conditions that influence climate, which mainly determines the productions and the occupations of the people. Some information concerning the history and the government of the state has been given; and the educational system of the state has been briefly outlined. In short, the book attempts to present such a view of the state of Kansas - its resources, its industries, and the life of its people - as ought to be known and may readily be learned by pupils belonging to the grammar grades of our public schools. It is hoped that the book will be found to have a value of its own apart from its use as a volume supplementary to a complete series. Excerpt from The Struggle for Freedom in Kansas The expediency of our electing ofiicers under the Lecompton constitution was obvious to a large majority of the Free State men of Kansas, and was well sup ported by The Herald of Freedom, The Leavenworth Times, and other influential newspapers'of our party. That policy was also urged on us by many influential friends of free State in and out of Con gress - by my father, the'hon. Thomas Ewing, of Ohio, who wrote my elder brother, Hugh Ewing, then in partner ship with me in the practice of law at Leavenworth, most strongly insisting that the Free State men in Kansas, who were known to have a large majority in the Territory, should elect the State Officers and members of the legislature under the Lecompton constitution, and thus take possession of the government and control it, so as to make Kansas a free State - just as in the then recent October election the Free State men chose the legislature and took possession of the territorial govern ment. The Hon. Salmon P. Chase, then governor of Ohio, wrote an urgent letter to Governor Robinson, advising the vot ing policy, which, as well as the letter from my father, was read to the convem tion with great effect. The Hon. Samuel F. Vinton, an eminent member of the House of Representatives from Ohio, wrote a similar letter to me, which I read to the convention, in which he said that if the Free State men should stubbornly and fanatically refuse to adopt this pol icy, he for one would abandon the strug gle in Congress in our behalf. It is not my purpose to criticise, condemn or commend the means adopted and practiced by you. It is enough for me to know, in this connection, that you understand the powers of man to be indefinitely perfectable by training, and that, acting upon this knowledge, your profession is steadily rising in the scale of values, drawing to its ranks the best minds of our country - men and women, intent upon a mastery of the best means to the accomplishment of a great and good end. It is my purpose to consume the valuable time you have so generously granted me, in discussing education in a broader than a technical sense, and in a higher and quite different relation than that which it holds to the individual. It is of education as a controlling force in the formation and maintenance of human governments that I desire to speak. I use the term "controlling force," in this connection, assuming and believing it a truth that education is the paramount power, dictating forms of government, and fixing their metes and bounds - the theory that governments control and shape education to their wishes and needs, being erroneous.
