Book Description
Excerpt from The Godly Pastor, Life of the Rev. Jeremiah Hallock: Of Canton, Conn;, To Which Is Added a Sketch of the Life of the Rev. Moses Hallock, of Plainfield, Mass Soon after his death in 1826, by request of the monthly-meeting of ministers with which he had long been connected, the compiler prepared a Memoir of the venerated and beloved man. Two editions were issued; he has now revised it, with a view to a more general circulation. Whatever has seemed to be of only local interest, or unnecessary to illus trate the grace of God in him as a Christian and a pastor, in his various relations, is omitted, while some new matter has been introduced. Book Description
Excerpt from Life of Rev. Jeremiah Hallock, Late Pastor of the Congregational Church in Canton, Conn At the request of the Monthly Meeting of Clergymen, Of which Mr. Hallock had for forty years been a member, the Compiler, not without much solicitude, consented to attempt what has resulted in this volume. The design is not to praise one who was the last to seek honor from men, and whose record is on high but partly to erect a monument of the grace of God, which, in con nexion with means, forms every character of high moral worth; and partly to present for imitation, a rare example of piety, fidelity, and success in the Christian Ministry. It has been the aim of the Compiler to furnish a portrait, which, the acquaintance of Mr. Hallock may own and cherish for its resemblance to the original, and from which trangers may derive a measure of that benign influence which personal friends have to a greater extent enjoyed. The better to accomplish this, he has been chiefly anxious to aid the man of God to stand forth before the eye of the Christian public in all the charm of his own grave, pious, plain, inimitable thoughts, words and actions. Book Description
Edwards and the Edwardseans gathers into a single volume eight of the author’s previously published articles and chapters. Suitable as either a basic or supplementary text for interested lay people and graduate students, this book serves as an introduction to the central spiritual and theological interests of Jonathan Edwards and to the long shadow those interests cast on his eponymous followers. The first four chapters (Part One) focus on Jonathan Edwards—his formative role in the Great Awakening, his biblical understanding of conversion, his perspective on petitionary prayer, and his influence on missionary endeavors. The following four chapters (Part Two) trace a well-defined theological movement from Edwards to his second- and especially third-generation followers. The impact of this movement resulted in the creation of a distinct theological culture that, over two generations, was institutionalized in informal seminaries or “schools of the prophets” in colleges attended by New Divinity students and staffed by New Divinity presidents and in missionary outreach both at home and abroad. Taken together, these chapters introduce theological subjects that mattered most to Edwards and his disciples: spiritual revival, conversion, the Bible, prayer, and extending the kingdom of God.

Book Description
The year 1810 marks the start of the North American foreign missions movement -- a movement begun with typical American enthusiasm and vigor but in need of practical grounding. This volume explores important facets of the development of North American foreign missions, paying particular attention to the role agencies like the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) played in shaping the theology, theory, and policy of evangelistic activities overseas. Written by leading experts on missions and religious history, this volume is distinguished by its focus on key events taking place at the home base rather than on happenings in the foreign mission field. In doing so, these insightful studies shed light on important yet neglected topics, including the impact of debates about slavery on foreign missions, the emergence of distinctive mission strategies for women, the role of the social gospel as a missionary ideology, and the contribution of foreign missions to the creation of a global evangelical network. Contributors: Alvyn AustinRuth Compton Brouwer, Wendy J. Diechmann Edwards, Janet F. Fishburn, Paul Harris, David W. Kling, Charles A. Maxfield III, Susan Wilds McArver, John F. Piper Jr., Dana L. Robert, Richard Lee Rogers, Wilbert R. Shenk, Carol Ann Vaughn. bThis excellent volume will command widespread attention not only for its display of scholarly expertise but for the fresh and revealing light it throws on the principal landmarks and major themes in the history of missionary expansion overseas.b -- Andrew Porter Kingbs College London
