Excerpt from The Gentleman's Magazine Library This volume begins a new section of the vast quantity of interesting and valuable material printed in the old Gentleman's Magazine and I venture to think that there are many who will be glad to have before them in a collected form these hitherto scattered papers on prehistoric and early historic archaeology. Some of them are the work of scientific archaeologists. It is important, however, to bear in mind that many of these contributions do not meet the requirements of modern science; they are disfigured by theories never very profound, and chiefly connected with the Druids, to whom all objects not historic seem to have been referred for an origin, except perhaps the amusing instance recorded on p. 142, Finally, they are not always complete or exhaustive. But, on the other hand, it is important to science to know where archaeological discoveries, however fragmentary and apparently insignificant, have been found; to know the condition of certain well-known monuments at particular dates; to know what the treasure-seeker and unscientific explorer have done in the past to plunder or injure objects which in these days are of surpassing importance. Many deplorable instances of destruction occur in the following pages. Scientific men have frequently lamented the want of support which the Government gives to the exploration and description of the archaeological remains of this country; but in the following pages it would seem that they have to lament also that the officers of the Government have occasionally acted as iconoclasts. Beowulf may be considered our national epic, but it does not stand to English people like the N ibelungen to the Germans, the Sagas to the Norse, the Kalewala to the Firm, the Iliad and Odyssey to the old Greeks, the Pentateuch to the Hebrews, the Vedas to the Hindu, nor like the Ossianic cycle to the Scottish and Irish. The Arthurian cycle of tales is the nearest approach to being national in its characteristics; and Professor Sayce agrees with Mr. Coote that the main figure of these stories was Artorius, a Roman general. Is it then that the Roman conquest uprooted the Celtic legends and overshadowed the later Teutonic legends? Such a question may well be asked of students of English traditional lore; for the only alternative is, that, just as Cicero had to lament the loss of the old national legends and stories of the Romans (see Cicero, In Brutum, so have we to lament that science has been so laggard in her recognition of the value of this important branch of materials for English history, that the opportunity has irretrievably passed away for its recovery.
