Book Description
Garden Festivals are more than temporary horticultural expositions. Complex and phased, these projects have additional significance as planning stratagems, reclamation projects, public art venues, and precursors of new urban parks. Their scope extends well beyond that implied by the term ‘garden festival’. Typically exceeding 50 hectares, they stimulate development and steer site design through a unique merger of domestic garden culture with a large-scale urban project. A general discussion of the origins, formative elements and chronology of the generic event followed by cross-cultural reviews and analyses of numerous recent festivals and their site legacies form the core of this first comprehensive book on the subject. Recent installations have been responsive to the ascendance of open space as a critical planning element while forthcoming events now develop in the midst of a trend towards the holistic initiatives of urban landscape planning, giving them a renewed relevance for urban design. The author has explored over fifteen festival sites and documents this study using government reports, interview transcripts, thematic maps, master plans, and other primary source material.

Book Description
The Houston area offers an abundance of resources and activities for gardeners and garden lovers, if people only know where to look: Love roses? Go to the Garden Center in Hermann Park. Want fresh vegetables? Pay in advance for a weekly supply at Central City Co-op. Can’t live without daffodils? Find twenty varieties at the Bulb and Plants Mart. In this handy, versatile guide to all things related to gardens in Houston and its environs, Texas Master Gardener Eileen Houston presents the book she wished had been available when she first moved to the city. Writing about public gardens, garden events, farmers’ markets, garden clubs, retail nurseries, volunteer opportunities, and more, Houston shares her favorite finds in an opening section, called “Best of the Best,” listing places and events she believes garden enthusiasts will not want to miss. For each garden site, event, and outlet, readers learn what they need to know about times, fees, locations, and contact information. A map and key help identify which destinations will require some planning and which can be easily enjoyed, depending on where readers live or work. Helpful descriptions focus on the special features or distinctive ambience of each place or happening. A chapter on retail sources is packed with advice: where to buy native or organically raised plants; how to find specialty shops and nurseries devoted to specific kinds of plants, such as African violets, bonsai, tropicals, roses, orchids, and cacti;· which retailers offer fountains, benches, sculptures, and antique garden accessories. At the end of the book, Houston steers readers to her recommended garden books and websites. Anyone interested in exploring the gardening scene in Houston and surrounding areas—whether resident or visitor, participant or spectator—will discover in this book much to do and share with family, friends, and fellow gardeners.

Book Description
Founded in a historic nursery in southeast Pennsylvania, Terrain is a nationally renowned garden, home, and lifestyle brand with an entirely fresh approach to living with nature. It’s an approach that bridges the gap between home and garden, the indoors and the outdoors. An approach that embraces decorating with plants and inviting the garden into every living space. Terrain, the book, not only captures the brand’s unique and lushly appealing sensibility in over 450 beautiful photographs but also shows, in project after project, tip after tip, how to live with nature at home. Here are ideas for flower arranging beyond the expected bouquet, using branches and wild blooms, seed heads and bulbs. Ten colorful container gardens inspired by painterly palettes. Dozens of ideas for making wreaths out of vines, dried stems, evergreens, and fresh leaves and fern fronds (which you learn to preserve in glycerin). Here are secrets for forcing branches to bloom in the middle of winter. Decorating with heirloom pumpkins, including turning them into tabletop planters. Simple touches—like massing high-summer hydrangeas into weathered baskets and scattering them around the patio—and more involved projects, including taking inspiration from Scandinavia and Britain to create a truly natural Christmas. With inspiration for every season, Terrain blurs the indoors and out to bring the subtle and surprising joys of nature into our lives every day.
