The Future of the Region
Author: The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research
Publisher: Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research
ISBN: 9948257219
Category : Antiques & Collectibles
Languages : en
Pages : 31
Book Description
This book presents some of the most important contributions made during the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) 22nd Annual Conference, titled ’The Future of the Region: Oil Price Challenges’. It seeks to outline strategies to ensure stability in Arab countries by identifying some of the key security issues, set against the context of oil price challenges. Chapter 1 examines the concept of stability, as well as the factors that have caused instability in the region, and suggests strategies to ensure peace and security, which is vital for the region’s advancement. Chapter 2 reviews the role of the GCC countries in maintaining regional stability, with a focus on the Gulf states’ emerging prominence as perhaps the only Arab power able to withstand the turmoil that has struck the region following the decline of the traditional Arab powers. Chapter 3 looks at shifting alliances in the region and suggests strategies for avoiding conflict within a new geo-political reality. Within this context, GCC countries should draw on their considerable capabilities to achieve and sustain security in the Arabian Gulf region, working to create a regional power base able to maintain military and economic balance. Chapter 4 sheds light on the policies and interests of the major powers in relation to the region. The significant decline in oil prices, consequences of the so-called Arab Spring, the crisis in Yemen, emergence of Da’esh and increased Iranian hostilities have had a major impact, raising the concerns of countries all over the world. Ultimately, partnership with major powers, such as the US, can help Gulf countries ensure the region’s stability and advancement. Chapter 5 considers how American views toward political Islam and religious extremism were shaped during Donald Trump’s presidential election campaign. It raises serious concerns over the campaign’s rhetoric, which can be viewed as having politicized Islamic extremism in the US, contributing to polarization and confusion over the issue, with implications for American relations with Gulf nations. Chapter 6 focuses on the economic policies of oil-producing states, which are in urgent need of major modification. In order to adapt to falling oil prices, two main mechanisms are identified; the use of sovereign wealth funds and a decrease in government spending. Finally, Chapter 7 continues the discussion of oil price challenges, reviewing the key issues in international oil markets, upon which the policies of oil-producing countries are based. Direct competition between oil producers in the region and American producers of shale oil is anticipated, especially during Trump’s tenure. The chapter’s conclusion is that for the foreseeable future, as GCC states diversify their economies, the oil sector will continue to play an essential role.

The Future of the Gulf Region
Author: Arno Tausch
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030782999
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 449
Book Description
This book studies values and attitudes in the Gulf region. In light of global power shifts, the threatening collapse of internal security in the West, and uncertainty about the current leadership vacuum in world society, this book explores a future leading role of the Gulf countries in such institutions as the G-20 and the OECD. Based on rigorous analysis of macro-level data and opinion surveys with relevance for the Gulf region, it analyzes the global macro-factors shaping the Gulf's future at a time of the global COVID-19 crisis and depression and rising global tensions. Starting with an empirical time series analysis of the long cycles of global politics and economics, it highlights the implications for the Gulf region. Offering a multivariate analysis of civil society values in the Gulf, the author analyzes value changes and attitudes on antisemitism, political Islam, internal security, democracy, and other issues of Arab politics. The partially optimistic conclusions of the study testify to the underestimated and incipient maturity of the Gulf’s civil society and strongly suggest that the Gulf's future is rather with the free societies of the West and not with a Neo-Ottoman Empire in whatever form. "Exceptional in scope and right up-to-the-minute in coverage" Brian M Pollins, Associate, Professor Emeritus, The Ohio State University. "An outstanding and topical book by an astute scholar of the MENA region" Professor Hussein Solomon, Academic Head of Department, Political Studies and Governance, University of the Free State, South Africa. "The most comprehensive and insightful study on the subject to date" Manfred B. Steger, Professor of Sociology, University of Hawai'i at Manoa and Global Professorial Fellow, Western Sydney University.

Regionalism without Regions
Author: Ulrich Schmid
Publisher: Central European University Press
ISBN: 9789637326639
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
This collective volume shows how Ukraine can best be understood through its regions and how the regions must be considered against the background of the nation. The overarching objective of the book is to challenge the dominance of the nation-state paradigm in the analyses of Ukraine by illustrating the interrelationship between national and regional dynamics of change. The authors—historians, sociologists, anthropologists, economists, literary critics and linguists from Ukraine, Poland, Switzerland, Germany and the USA—explicitly go beyond the perspective of an entity defined by traditional political borders and cultural, economic, historical or religious stereotypes. The research project that led to the composition of the book combined quantitative (statistical surveys conducted across Ukraine) and qualitative (in-depth interviews and focus-group discussion) methods. The authors came to the conclusion that regionalism as a defining phenomenon of Ukraine is more prominent than the regions themselves. This approach regards Ukraine as a construct in flux where different discourses intersect, concur and eventually merge through the lenses of various disciplines and methodologies.

The Future of ISIS
Author: Feisal al-Istrabadi
Publisher: Brookings Institution Press
ISBN: 0815732171
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 272
Book Description
Looking to the future in confronting the Islamic State The Islamic State (best known in the West as ISIS or ISIL) has been active for less than a decade, but it has already been the subject of numerous histories and academic studies—all focus primarily on the past. The Future of ISIS is the first major study to look ahead: what are the prospects for the Islamic State in the near term, and what can the global community, including the United States, do to counter it? Edited by two distinguished scholars at Indiana University, the book examines how ISIS will affect not only the Middle East but the global order. Specific chapters deal with such questions as whether and how ISIS benefitted from intelligence failures, and what can be done to correct any such failures; how to confront the alarmingly broad appeal of Islamic State ideology; the role of local and regional actors in confronting ISIS; and determining U.S. interests in preventing ISIS from gaining influence and controlling territory. Given the urgency of the topic, The Future of ISIS is of interest to policymakers, analysts, and students of international affairs and public policy.
