Book Description
Two young gentry women meet by chance at a nunnery in Yangzhou, where they fall in love at first sight. After they exchange poetry and recognize each other’s literary talents, their emotional bond deepens. They conduct a mock wedding ceremony at the nunnery and hatch a plan to spend the rest of their lives together. Their schemes are stymied by a series of obstacles, but in the end the two women find an unlikely resolution—a ménage-à-trois marriage. The Fragrant Companions is the most significant work of literature that portrays female same-sex love in the entire premodern Chinese tradition. Written in 1651 by Li Yu, one of the most inventive and irreverent literary figures of seventeenth-century China, this play is at once an unconventional romantic comedy, a barbed satire, and a sympathetic portrayal of love between women. It offers a sensitive portrait of the two women’s passion for each other, depicts their intellectual pursuits and resourcefulness, and celebrates their partial triumph over social convention. At the same time, Li caustically mocks the imperial examination system and deflates the idealized image of the male scholar. The Fragrant Companions is both an indispensable source for students and scholars of gender and sexuality in premodern China and a compelling work of literature for all readers interested in China’s rich theatrical traditions.

Book Description
This is a guide to contemporary debates and theatre practices at a time when gender paradigms are both in flux and at the centre of explosive political battlegrounds. The confluence of gender and theatre has long created intense debate about representation, identification, social conditioning, desire, embodiment, and lived experience. As this handbook demonstrates, from the conventions of early modern English, Chinese, Japanese and Hispanic theatres to the subversion of racialized binaries of masculinity and femininity in recent North American, African, Asian, Caribbean and European productions, the matter of gender has consistently taken centre stage. This handbook examines how critical discourses on gender intersect with key debates in the field of theatre studies, as a lens to illuminate the practices of gender and theatre as well as the societies they inform and represent across space and time. Of interest to scholars in the interrelated areas of feminist, gender and sexuality studies, theatre and performance studies, cultural studies, and globalization and diasporic studies, this book demonstrates how researchers are currently addressing theatre about gender issues and gendered theatre practices. While synthesizing and summarizing foundational and evolving debates from a contemporary perspective, this collection offers interpretations and analyses that do not simply look back at existing scholarship, but open up new possibilities and understandings. Featuring essential research tools, including a survey of keywords and an annotated play list, this is an indispensable scholarly handbook for anyone working in theatre and performance.

Book Description
Young Paulter adores the Grand Court Wizard, Galdar and in secrecy serves as his apprentice. When Galdar is poisoned, the stage is set for a race against time in which Paulter must be ordained by the source of magic "the Heart". This is an imperative and time-honored procedure that will allow him to become the next Grand Court Wizard. Evil Ronar pulls out all the stops in an effort to stop Paulter from reaching his lofty goal. Ronar feels that the timing is perfect to make his attempt at overtaking their world while Galdar is no longer there to protect them. He creates a massive army that threatens the very existence of the Faerie world and will eventually annihilate all the other races one at a time. With the help of some unlikely friends, Paulter struggles to reach the Heart and put an end to the senseless carnage that Ronar is willing to inflict on anyone standing in his way. However, there are still other issues that Paulter must deal with, including the search to find the murderer of his friend and mentor, Galdar. This is a story of the struggle between good and evil, but also, the emergence of a man who is destined to play a powerful role in the care of the races that comprise his world. The friends who help him, all have different roles to play and both collectively and individually help Paulter to realize how important friends can be.
