Book Description
Excerpt from The Fox Terrier This head sets On a longish neck that curves into the line of the back and sweeps down into the chest. The throat is clean, and the chest narrow but deep. Many of the dogs Of to day are shallow chested, which does not make for sound bellows and pump, and others are too narrow, a fault that is usually accompanied by tied in elbows and turned out toes. The shoulder Of a race horse, long, clean, Sloping, muscular without being heavy, is the shoulder desired. The forelegs should be straight as strings, and the bone of even thickness all the way down. The correct elbows are turned neither in nor out. The pasterns must be springy, but strong. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
This book provides you with a thorough description and positive attributes of the wire fox terrier, including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors, and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known predisposed hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small head, deep chest, narrow waist, and large leg muscles. On the other hand, dachshunds take their name from German words, meaning “badger dog,” and they use their long nose, long body, and short legs to both track, enter, and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historical references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various veterinary medical texts and journals, such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular, and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over four hundred known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my first book in 1983, less than fifty hereditary issues are able to be predicted and/or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing, including blood tests and urine testing, plus phenotypic examinations, such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a board certified veterinary ophthalmologist, have advanced the science of breed-related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners, and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.

Book Description
Small to medium-sized terrier dogs, Wire Fox Terriers are named for their unique wiry or rough coat. Extremely active, bright, and joyful, this breed is a joy to be around. The physical characteristics that make Wire Fox Terriers stand out include their proportionate build, expressive skull, and petite V-shaped ears. They stand between 15.5 and 18.5 inches (39 and 47 cm) at the shoulder and have a docked tail. These dogs were initially developed in England for the purpose of fox hunting; their small stature and quickness made it possible for them to follow foxes even into their tunnels. Today, they are popular as companion animals and in dog shows, noted for their alert, outgoing, and sociable demeanor. They need physical activity and mental challenge on a daily basis to thrive. While both the Wire and Smooth Fox Terrier belong to the Terrier Group in dog shows, the Wire Fox Terrier is distinguished by its longer, wirier coat. Personality and activity levels are two areas where the two breeds overlap.

Book Description
Originally published in 1933, this extremely rare early work on the Wire Haired Fox Terrier is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and photographs, as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The author was a highly respected breeder of the day. The book's 144 pages cover all aspects of the Wire Haired Fox Terrier. Begining with the history of the breed, it moves on to discuss buying, breeding, feeding and showing amongst many other topics. There is a "Standard description of the correct appearance and scale of points" and a number of excellent photos of famous dogs of the day. This is a fascinating read for any Wire enthusiast or historian of the breed but also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are reprinting these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork. CHAPTERS INCLUDE: - I. - THE HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF THE BREED II. - THE "WIRE'S" POPULARITY III. - SOME FAMOUS WIRE STRAINS, ANCIENT AND MODERN IV. - CHOOSING A WIRE V. - TRAINING THE WIRE VI. - STANDARD DESCRIPTION AND SCALE OF POINTS VII. - PREPARATION FOR SHOW AND SHOWING VIII. - THE BREEDING OF WIRES AND REARING OF PUPPIES IX. - HINTS ON FEEDING X. - HOW TO START A KENNEL
