Book Description
In Imamiyya theological circles the members of the household of the Holy Prophet (s) are referred to as the fourteen infallibles. Namely, the Prophet (s) himself, his daughter Fatima (as), his son-in-law Ali (as), then his grandsons Hassan (as) and Hussein (as) and the nine descendants from Hussein (as): Ali ibn Hussein (as), Muhammad ibn Ali (as), Ja'far ibn Muhammad (as), Musa ibn Ja'far (as), Ali ibn Musa (as), Muhammad ibn Ali (as), Ali ibn Muhammad (as), Hassan ibn Ali (as) and the Messiah known as al-Mahdi (ajfs). The principle aim of this examination is three-fold: The first reason we are going to dissect the biographies of each member of the household of the Prophet (s) is to apply their lessons in our life, because when we dissect the lives of these personalities we must ask ourselves, What of their lives over one thousand years ago affects our lives today in 2012? Which of their standpoints, which of their ethics, and which of their principles can relate to my standpoints, my ethics and my principles today? Which situations did they face in their life may I be facing in my life? When we come to dissect the lives of every one of these leaders, it should not just be a theoretical discussion about when they were born, or how many children they had, or whom they were married to. While that part of knowledge is important, what is equally important, and what should really be important, is a practical discussion that examines the way their lives can affect our lives. Which circumstances did they fall into which we may fall into as well? We find that the first of the important points in dissecting the biographies of these fourteen infallibles is that we want their lives to relate to ours.

The Ten Granted Paradise
Author: Sayed Ammar Nakshawani
Publisher: Universal Muslim Association of America
ISBN: 0990374009
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 269
Book Description
Dr. Nakshawani in the following work not only corrects the widespread misconception that the Shi’i intellectual tradition despises and curses all Companions, but also clarifies the reason for which some Companions were considered people of Paradise in the Shi’i (and usually the Sunni) tradition. In a few places, the author notes reasons for which the Shi’i tradition does not venerate certain Companions. Discussing controversial history as it relates to Companions and the ahl al-bayt remains a difficult enterprise, where methods and premises, let alone conclusions, substantially differ from scholar to scholar. As an expert of the Shi’i tradition, Dr. Nakshawani presents relevant Shi’i narratives for non-specialists who would otherwise be unaware of them. Thus, the following biographies fill a gap in knowledge about Companions not only revered in the Shi’i tradition, but according to the collective memory of pro-Alid Sunni and Shi’i authors, granted Paradise.

Twelve Infallible Men
Author: Matthew Pierce
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 0674737075
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 267
Book Description
A millennium ago, Baghdad was the capital of one of history’s greatest civilizations. A new Islamic era was under way. Yet despite the profound cultural achievements, many Muslims felt their society had gone astray. Shiˀa Muslims challenged the dominant narrative of Islamic success with stories of loss. Faithful Muslims have long debated whether Sunni caliphs or Shiˀa imams were the true heirs of the Prophet Muhammad. More influential has been the way Muslim communities remembered those disputes through stories that influenced how to think and feel about them, Matthew Pierce argues. Twelve Infallible Men focuses on the role of narratives of the imams in the development of a distinct Shiˀa identity. During the tenth century, at a critical juncture in Islamic history, a group of scholars began assembling definitive works containing accounts of the twelve imams’ lives. These collective biographies constructed a sacred history, portraying the imams as strong, beautiful, learned, and pious. Miracles surrounded their birth, and they became miracle workers in turn, but were nevertheless betrayed and martyred by enemies. These biographies inspired and entertained, but more importantly they offered a meaningful narrative of history for Muslims who revered the imams. The accounts invoked shared memories and shaped communal responses and ritual practices of grieving. Mourning the imams’ tragic fates helped nascent Shiˀa communities resist the pressure to forget their story. The biographies of the imams became a focal point of cultural memory, inspiring Shiˀa religious imagination for centuries to come.

The Women of Karbala
Author: Kamran Scot Aghaie
Publisher: University of Texas Press
ISBN: 0292784449
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 310
Book Description
Commemorating the Battle of Karbala, in which the Prophet Mohammad's grandson Hosayn and seventy-two of his family members and supporters were martyred in 680 CE, is the central religious observance of Shi'i Islam. Though much has been written about the rituals that reenact and venerate Karbala, until now no one has studied women's participation in these observances. This collection of original essays by a multidisciplinary team of scholars analyzes the diverse roles that women have played in the Karbala rituals, as well as the varied ways in which gender-coded symbols have been used within religious and political discourses. The contributors to this volume consider women as participants in and observers of the Karbala rituals in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, India, Pakistan, and the United States. They find that women's experiences in the Shi'i rituals vary considerably from one community to another, based on regional customs, personal preferences, religious interpretations, popular culture, and socioeconomic background. The authors also examine the gender symbolism within the rituals, showing how it reinforces distinctions between the genders while it also highlights the centrality of women to the symbolic repertory of Shi'ism. Overall, the authors conclude that while Shi'i rituals and symbols have in some ways been used to restrict women's social roles, in other ways they have served to provide women with a sense of independence and empowerment.
