Book Description
Excerpt from The Formation of the Gospels The ensuing pages contain an attempt to solve the Synoptic problem by methods similar to those employed in the orthodox solution of the Hexateuchal - by allowing weight to the doublets, repetitions, and inconsistencies, from which none of the Synoptic Gospels is free. No pretence is made to completeness of treatment. A new construction-theory is sketched, which must stand or fall by the test, "Will it work?" In the Hexateuchal problem the difficulty arises from the deficiency of data. But in the Synoptic, the case is otherwise. The locks to be opened are too many and complicated for any but the right key to fit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Formation of the New Testament About fourteen years ago, while a student in Union Theological Seminary, I began a study of the ante-nicene Fathers, with a view to discover ing the forces and aims that caused the Christian Church to form a New Testament. I submitted an essay at that time, for which I was awarded the prize in New Testament Introduction. A few years later I read a paper on the same sub ject before the American Society of Church His tory. While a pastor in New Haven I did some work in the library of Yale University, especially on the fragments of Heracleon's Commentary of John, preserved for us by Origen, on the ground of authority underlying the Christianity of Clement of Alexandria, and on several other subjects closely related to this discussion. Book Description
Excerpt from Gospel Development: A Study of the Origin and Growth of the Four Gospels by Mutual Comparison; In Two Divisions, I. Comparison in Language; II. Comparison in Subject Nor has the writer approached the subject in a partisan spirit. And advanced only those argu ments which might seem to support his position. Every matter taken up has been treated with the utmost fairness. Every particle of evidence. Pro and con. That could be found. Has been considered and carefully weighed. And every conclusion arrived at has been the result of the most impartial de liberation. In fact. The writer has assumed the function of a judge. Who. Without being committed to either side. Treats both with fairness and justice. And endeavors. From the mass of conflicting testi mony. To sift out the truth. Book Description
Excerpt from The First Three Gospels: Their Origin and Relations This little book is an attempt to set before the ordinary English reader some of the results of recent study of the First Three Gospels. A few years ago I endeavoured to draw up a brief account of the general social and religious conditions amid which Jesus lived and taught. It was my hope then that se in Palestine might be speedily followed by a short and simple Commentary on the Gospel according to S. Luke. But the preparation of a series of Notes on that Gospel for the use of parents and teachers, l convinced me that no commentary could be really useful or intelligible until the way had been made ready by a previous exposition of the modes of thought and feeling which helped to Shape the Gospel narratives. The following pages are intended to set forth some of these ideas, and describe the growth of the documents in which they were finally embodied. Book Description
Excerpt from The Four Gospels in the Earliest Church History However the ground may change in the conflict as to the credibility of the Gospel history, the first line of defence, it seems to me, must always be the external evidence. It is the external evidence for the Four Gospels which I have endeavoured in these Lectures to state in the light of the most recent research. The statement does not profess to be minutely exhaustive, but it is hoped that nothing material has been overlooked. To the Baird Trustees I owe cordial acknowledgments for giving me the opportunity of dealing with this important subject for the first time in their Lectureship. It has been a high gratification to me that my old teacher, Professor Charteris, has read the Lectures in proof, and done so with the ardour and keenness of former years. From my ever-helpful colleague, Professor Cowan, I have received similar aid and many valuable suggestions.
