In September, 1981, a cargo ship loaded with marijuana departs a Colombian port carrying Carlos Zipante, a guerrilla commander on a covert assignment to purchase arms for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), a deal financed by narco-traffickers. He disembarks at a Cuban fishing village where he is met by two army officers. During the ride over familiar mountain roads, memories of his mother's murder by a Colombian military death squad seep into his mind. He recalls his formative years at a Bogotá university as a law student, joining the Communist Party and later the FARC. After leaving Cuba, he's picked up by an American shrimp trawler that takes him to Florida. He connects a Colombian drug kingpin and gets a new identity to fly to Washington to meet with a Belgian weapons dealer. Disguised as a Spanish businessman, he meets the Belgian at a Middle Eastern embassy and is also introduced to Anne Henderson, a young American lawyer. Both are immediately attracted to one another and fall in love. Carlos sets up his deals to buy weapons, one with the Belgian and the other with his Cuban contact. Carlos and Anne spend a weekend together and upon their return to Washington, a bullet is fired at their car and Carlos thinks the bullet is meant for him; afraid of endangering Anne's life, he confesses to her that he is a guerilla buying arms. After he secures a weapons deal with the Cuban dealer, he quickly leaves the country. Ann asks her politically well-connected father for help. Within two weeks, curriculum vitae of Carlos, gathered from US intelligence agencies, is given to Anne. Not long after, Carlos calls Anne from Venezuela, tells her that he is headed for Colombia, and then sends her several emotionally charged love letters.Meanwhile, in the tropical town of San Martin, Colombia, a wealthy cattle rancher, Alberto Alvarez, is kidnapped by FARC guerrillas and taken into the jungle of Colombia's vast eastern plains. In the months that follow, both Carlos and Anne go on with their separate, although somewhat connected, lives. Carlos treks through the jungle with his insurgents setting up bivouacs and recruiting future guerrillas. Anne becomes desperate when she finds out that she is pregnant with Carlos's child and creates an imaginary husband to save her professional reputation. Eventually Carlos finds out about his son's birth when he calls Anne from a safe house. Carlos is overwhelmed with the news and has self-doubt about remaining an insurgent.For the next few months, while Carlos and his band of guerrillas are on the run, he was forced to take on a prisoner held for ransom. While fighting the army, Carlos and his prisoner, Alvarez, get to respect each other, and develop an unusual kinship. Carlos releases the man a few days before his ransom is paid.When Carlos's guerrilla front advances toward Venezuela's border, they are ambushed by the Colombian army and while retreating back into the jungle, they stumble across a cocaine-processing plant; FARC headquarters orders Carlos to watch over the lab until the owners can pay a "protection fee." However, the Colombian army catches up with Carlos at the lab where several are killed and wounded, including Carlos. Tomas takes the lead. The rebels return to the battle scene to look for survivors and weapons. Unfortunately, the army had already cleaned up and removed the dead and wounded. FARC assumes that Carlos was killed, and promotes Tomas as commander. Two months later, Tomas visits former prisoner Alvarez, to ask him to send several of Carlos's letters to the American woman. Alvarez reluctantly agrees and tells them not to contact him anymore.Alvarez keeps his promise. Another month passes before Anne receives the letters and also a long-awaited phone call from Maracaibo, Venezuela. Carlos has survived.

This book examines the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) as a commercial insurgency through the network-complex paradigm of insurgency. Countering traditional perspectives of the group, it proposes new and comprehensive explanations for the FARC’s presence in Latin America. Existing narratives have portrayed the FARC as a terrorist, narco-terrorist, or criminal organization – a narrative popularized by the government offensive conducted by the Colombian state during the last couple of decades. In contrast, this book goes beyond simplistic perspectives of the FARC and instead studies the group in relation to the network-complex paradigm of insurgency. It explains the organization as a ‘commercial insurgency’ with three dimensions – political, criminal, and military – and understands the Colombian insurgency not as a monolith, but as a system of individuals with diversified interests ranging from the highly indoctrinated to the profit-motivated. This examination allows for an analysis of some of the insurgency’s most unexplored characteristics: an interest in urbanizing its actions and the increased ‘invisibility’ of combatants, the significance of its political institutions, and the construction of its transnational networks. The volume also discusses the future of FARC in post-conflict Colombia, not only within the country but as an actor in the region. In My Life as a Colombian Revolutionary, María Eugenia Vásquez Perdomo presents a gripping account of her experiences as a member of M-19, one of the most successful guerrilla movements in Colombia's tumultuous modern history. Vásquez's remarkable story opens with her happy childhood in a middle-class provincial household in which she was encouraged to be adventurous and inquisitive. This thesis argues that the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia- People2s Army (FARC-EP), Latin America2s oldest and most powerful guerrilla organization, has not abandoned its ideological beliefs and devolved into a criminal enterprise as a result of its immersion in the drug trade and participation in other illicit activities. Rather, the movement remains an ideologically committed, guerrilla insurgency whose strategic objectives include the defeat of the Colombian military, the toppling of the central government, and the establishment of a regime founded on Marxist-Leninist and 3Bolivarian4 principles. While recognizing the important role that resources earned from criminal activities have played in strengthening the FARC-EP2s challenge to the government, this thesis argues that the guerrilla organization2s involvement in the drug trade serves exclusively as a means to an end. However, numerous factors including recent changes in leadership, the recruitment of non-ideologically motivated and poorly educated fighters, and the increased operations tempo have led to the weakening of the ideological commitment of the base. Consequently, many of the FARC-EP2s newer recruits are poorly educated in the political goals of the insurgency. This, combined with the weakening of the organization2s leadership could result in the devolution of the FARC-EP into several criminal enterprises.

Colombia has experienced an extensive internal war for over forty years. What once began as a mission of the Colombian army, funded by the United States, to attack and destroy peasant-based subsistence communities in the southern mountains of Colombia has evolved into a full scale revolutionary conflict. The principal actors within this reality are the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - People's Army (FARC-EP) and the Colombian government. This thesis examines how the FARC-EP, a self-described Marxist-rooted social movement, theoretically and tangibly applies itself within the rural (and urban) regions of the country for the purpose of achieving revolutionary emancipation for the Colombian majority. Because of the threat the FARC-EP poses to domestic and foreign interests within the natural resource-rich Andean country, the classification as a terrorist entity has recently been attached to the insurgency. This thesis analyzes whether this label, within the milieu of Colombia, is accurate or if the FARC-EP is in fact a guerrilla movement implementing a revolution based on the theories and actions of classical Marxism. As a result of this research being conducted the analyst can derive the FARC-EP's true character within Colombia and assess the place that Marxism has within the contemporary context of this Latin American country.
