Book Description
Excerpt from The Fall of the Monarch of Charles I, Vol. 1: 1637-1649 Yet in spite of all risks I have ventured to tell again a familiar tale. It has not, I hope, been for nothing that many years ago, as a young and unknown writer, I deliberately refrained from selecting a sub ject more attractive in its own nature than the reign of James I. Could possibly be. It seemed to me then, as it seems to me now, that it was the duty of a serious inquirer to search into the original causes of great events rather than, for the sake of catching at an audience, to rush unprepared upon the great events themselves. My reward has been that, whether the present work is well or ill done, it is at all events far better done than it could have been if I had commenced with the tale of the Puritan Revolution itself. Whether that tale will ever be told in its completeness by me, neither I nor any one can tell. To me personally, as a descendant of Cromwell and Ireton, it would be a special satisfaction to call up them and their contemporaries before me, and to learn the true secret of their success and failure. To the historian no more interesting period can be found than one in which men of virtue and ability strove with one another in seeking the solution of the highest problems at a time when the old chain of precedent had been violently snapped, and when all things seemed possible to the active intelligence. Book Description
Excerpt from The Fall of the Monarchy of Charles I, Vol. 2: 1637-1649; 1640-1642 ON November 3 that famous assembly which was to be known to all time as the Long Parliament, met at Westminster. It was impossible that the view of public affairs which was taken by the King should satisfy the men who now came together from every part of England. They were firmly persuaded, not that a few things had gone wrong, but that everything had gone wrong. The future Cavalier and the future Roundhead were of one mind in this. Nor would they be content to submit the choice of the abuses to be abolished to the reason and conscience of the King. They had resolved to measure the remedies which they desired by their own reason and con science. Charles had by his actions thrust into the foreground the question of Sovereignty, and it could never be put out of sight again. Unhappily it was rather to he wished than to be expected that the claim to supremacy which Parlia ment was justified in putting forward, should have been swollen by no unreasonable demands, and sup ported on no fictitious allegations. The worst result. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
