If the reader was conscious of a slight z'x'afepov wpdtgpov in the process of argument, it may perhaps be condoned by the fact that the order of discovery is not always the order of logic. The task then to which we wish to address ourselves in a series of articles about to appear in this magazine is to prove the existence of an Aramaic Gospel embedded in our present Gospels, and to unveil its contents. Excerpt from The Expositor's Greek Testament, Vol. 3 I. In the case of no book of the New Testament is it more essential to a true understanding of its language, that we should have a clear view of the circumstances under which it was composed, than in the case of 2 Corinthians. It is the most autobiographical of all St. Paul's letters, and it abounds in personal allusions, which it is difficult, at this distance of time, to appreciate, and of which some will probably always remain obscure. It glows with the heat of fervid life,1 and was evidently written under the influence of strong emotion. And, if we do not assign it to its true place in St. Paul's life, we are likely to miss a good deal of the force of its earnest and eager words. It is, therefore, desirable to enter into more detail as to the occasion of its composition than was necessary in the case of a treatise like the Epistle to the Romans, the argu ments of which are largely independent of the circumstances of the author at the time when it was written. For it has been shewn that die-re has in itself no governing power, is in itself but an index, a mere fingerpost or stepping-stone conducting to some verb or other beyond it, whether to e'xet or to fie or to 33't or to 5x0; c'iv, what cares (tic-re '2 The particle is supremely indifferent, probably quite unconscious, neither knowing nor caring to know whether it guides the reader to an infinitive or to an indicative or even to an optative with or without c'iv. Hence it appears that the exew in this text is not at all governed or controlled by June, but simply indicated by it. The infinitive, in fact, if an infinitive which denotes what is conceptional and not what is actual can be said to stand at all, stands by itself. That the 6501's and the e'xew are in construction independent of each other, may be further shewn by the frequent absence of this par tiole before the infinitive, for instance New or paee'iv, just as in English to wit. For it was a delicate situation which one less gracious and refined would almost certainly have spoiled. But both by gesture and by judg ment all His own He bore it up into a region in which the natural bonds of home and kindred were transcended but not destroyed, and in which everything was made to rest upon the spiritual principle of the practice of the will of God. Where that Obtained, there was the basis as there were the bonds of a holy family in truth, potentially as vast as the human family itself. So without a hint of censure or even of impatience towards His too obtrusive friends He simply re-affirmed His principle in relation to the family, His own and every other, making it consist of those, the old and young alike, who chose to do the Father's will and who in conse quence were bound to Him by ties as dear as those of mother, sister brother. These were His next of kin in fact and fully, who, m the words of thefourth Evangelist, were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. It was no doubt upon the same occasion that a certain woman catching sight of Jesus' mother lifted up her voice and broke into fervent praises of her blessedness. And once again, without disclaiming aught of the truth extolled, Jesus took and changed it into a form in keeping with his master-thought.
