Book Description
The Untold History of Television provides an exciting glimpse behind the scenes of the groundbreaking series that have defined the landscape of popular culture. Comedy has been a staple of broadcast television since the inception of the medium. And from Lucille Ball to Carol Burnett to Mary Tyler Moore, women have proved themselves more than adept at delivering a joke. But women's contribution to comedy goes far beyond perfect timing—the women who have advanced comedy on television have developed, produced, written, and starred in the shows that are now considered comedy classics. 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt are just two of the many modern comedies in which women have played key roles—although in this case, a single woman, Tina Fey, is the creative genius behind both. Through the voice of Liz Lemon, 30 Rock tackled topics ranging from race to politics to age, and over the course of its seven seasons won an impressive ninety Emmy nominations. Fey continues to tackle difficult subjects in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, this time through the lens of the enthusiastically naive Kimmy, a kidnapping victim who refuses to let her past experiences define her. The ebook contains information about the inception and development of the series, thought-provoking episode analysis, and on-the-set stories about the cast and crew.

When eighteen-year-old Raina Reed is given an ultimatum—her family or her first love—she chooses the latter, leaves the rigid cult community she’s grown up in and finds herself shunned, ex-communicated . . . ghosted. Not seeing her parents is tolerable. Raina is happy for more time with her sweet, talented boyfriend Bryce, and enjoys the freedom found in living with him, his free-spirited cousin, Jackie, and Jackie’s mom Valerie, a struggling attorney. But her heart breaks at the thought of not seeing her baby sister. Abby is ten years younger and they’ve never spent one day apart—until now. While Raina embraces her new life, she can’t shake her concern about Abby, especially when a lingering illness worsens and her parents refuse to seek medical help. Raina is determined to break through the religious rules that stand in the way of her sister’s well-being. Drawing on her new family and support system, including chanting, angel-card reading Jackie, justice-seeking Valerie, loving Bryce—and his eccentric, praying grandmother—Raina finds her own kind of faith, one built on a love strong enough to move mountains . . . Book Description
Conceiving Agency: Reproductive Authority among Haredi Women explores the ways Haredi Jewish women make decisions about their reproductive lives. Although they must contend with interference from doctors, rabbis, and the Israeli government, Haredi women find space for—and insist on—autonomy from them when they make decisions regarding the use of contraceptives, prenatal testing, fetal ultrasounds, and other reproductive practices. Drawing on their experiences of pregnancy, knowledge of cultural norms of reproduction, and theological beliefs, Raucher shows that Haredi women assert that they are in the best position to make decisions about reproduction. Conceiving Agency puts forward a new view of Haredi women acting in ways that challenge male authority and the structural hierarchies of their conservative religious tradition. Raucher asserts that Haredi women's reproductive agency is a demonstration of women's commitment to Haredi life and culture as well as an indication of how they define religious ethics.
