Book Description
This historical guidebook, published when the British Raj was at its height, instructs Englishwomen on how to run an efficient household in India. Written by an anonymous longtime resident of the country, this book begins by offering readers instructions on what to bring on the long journey to India. As the voyage took weeks by boat, a specific itinerary is offered: unnecessary items and sundries are discouraged, as are things which would spoil quickly, or that can easily be acquired in Indian marketplaces or stores. We then hear about the various attributes of a good household in India. Topics include acquiring a competent and reliable team of servants; making the home presentable, tidy and well-furnished; and establishing an environment suited to bringing up and educating children. We also hear of how a household must be ready for travel at short notice, such as on colonial business. In the case of rural dwellings, the need for a properly run stable and farmyard is also detailed. The second portion of the book contains hundreds of recipes. Some of these, such as curries and certain meat dishes, are decidedly Indian while others demonstrate how to improvise popular European dishes from ingredients commonly found in the locality. This portion of the text concludes with a series of menus suitable for feeding the entire family in any given month.

Book Description
"Flora Annie Steel was a contemporary of Rudyard Kipling and she rivaled his popularity as a writer of her times, but gender-biased politics made her gradually fade in readers' minds. This collection is the first to focus entirely on this "unconventional memsahib" and her contribution to turn-of-the-century Anglo-Indian literature. The eight essays draw attention to Steel's multifaceted work--ranging from fiction and journalism to letter writing, from housekeeping manuals to philanthropic activities. These essays, by recognized experts on Steel's life and work, will appeal to interdisciplinary scholars and readers in the fields of Women's Studies, British India, Colonial and Postcolonial Studies, Cultural Studies, and Victorian writing."--

Book Description
Culture, Religion, and Home-making in and Beyond South Asia explores how the idea of the home is repurposed or re-envisioned in relation to experiences of modernity, urbanization, conflict, migration and displacement. It considers how these processes are reflected in rituals, beliefs and social practices. It explores the processes by which "home" may be constructed and how relocations often result in either the replication or rejection of traditional homes and identities. Ponniah examines the various contestations surrounding the categories of "home" and "religion," including interfaith families, urban spaces, and sacred places.

Book Description
Prezentowane analizy zostały starannie osadzone we właściwym im kontekście historycznym i społeczno-kulturowym, dając wyraz pogłębionemu rozumieniu analizowanych przedstawień. […] Z recenzji prof. dr hab. Danuty Stasik

Book Description
The history of food is one of the fastest growing areas of historical investigation, incorporating methods and theories from cultural, social, and women’s history while forging a unique perspective on the past. The Routledge History of Food takes a global approach to this topic, focusing on the period from 1500 to the present day. Arranged chronologically, this title contains 17 originally commissioned chapters by experts in food history or related topics. Each chapter focuses on a particular theme, idea or issue in the history of food. The case studies discussed in these essays illuminate the more general trends of the period, providing the reader with insight into the large-scale and dramatic changes in food history through an understanding of how these developments sprang from a specific geographic and historical context. Examining the history of economic, technological, and cultural interactions between cultures and charting the corresponding developments in food history, The Routledge History of Food challenges readers' assumptions about what and how people have eaten, bringing fresh perspectives to well-known historical developments. It is the perfect guide for all students of social and cultural history.

Book Description
This book utilizes cuisine to understand the construction of the colonial middle class in Bengal who indigenized new culinary experiences as a result of colonial modernity. This process of indigenization developed certain social practices, including imagination of the act of cooking as a classic feminine act and the domestic kitchen as a sacred space. The process of indigenization was an aesthetic choice that was imbricated in the upper caste and patriarchal agenda of the middle-class social reform. However, in these acts of imagination, there were important elements of continuity from the pre-colonial times. The book establishes the fact that Bengali cuisine cannot be labeled as indigenist although it never became widely commercialized. The point was to cosmopolitanize the domestic and yet keep its tag of 'Bengaliness'. The resultant cuisine was hybrid, in many senses like its makers.
