Book Description
Excerpt from The Englishman in Canada: A Satire I brought with me some guide-books and the latest papers, from which I gained some knowledge of the geography of the colony and of the character of its people, as well as of a few of the latest events that had taken place there, so that' I was enabled to form some sort of a programme for my guidance. It was my intention to have left the steamer at'the Banks of Newfoundland and 'walk into Toronto z'nmgm'fa, so that I would not be overwhelmed and bored with laudations and addresses by the stupid colonists, who flock to see persons of distinction, such as Lord Dufferin, the Princess Louise and myself, (and when Dufferin and theprincess suffered so severely, it would have been infinitely worse for me if it were known that I was a member of so eminent a Society as the S. P. C. I. And again, not beinga good sailor and tired with calls for contributions from the inexorable Neptune I did not like to be tossed about upon the restless waves of the Atlantie'longer than I could help and, as might have been expected, I found that the farther those wav'es receded from the benign influence of my dear old home, the more turbulent and desperate they became. But the genial and whole souled Captain Cuttlefin prevailed upon me to abandon my intention of landing at the Banks, and Istepped ashore at a place ca. Led Halifax instead I yielded more willingly because he gave mariy cogent reasons to dissuade me from fol lowing the plan I had first laid down, and as he could give every information about anything I might Wish to know, I confidingly submitted myself to his guidance and instruction. This allusion is not merely poetical; it applies generally, from the speculator in worldly dross, whose fancy sublimates at the idea of gold, and in blissful 3anticipa tion calculates his gains, to him who, from the inexhaustible mine of pure bene volence, becomes an' architect in charity, raises structures which bless his present hours, by making himself the voluntary treasure of sorrows, which; perhaps, make his terrestrial abode less cheerful, f'but ul. Excerpt from The Englishman, Vol. 6 of 6: A Novel Sidney, said the baronet, how well you judged the excellent Durweston, ' when I so unfortunately mistook his principles! 1 say wrong. It was not him, but his mis sion, which excited my intemperate te pulse: he is truly a fine young man, alive to the feelings of a man, without a particle of arrogance, or an inlet which could im press a belief he would yield where it is proper to Oppose. I am not certain he does not carry his principles a little too far at least, he has mortified my zeal, though without diminishing my regard. Book Description
Excerpt from The Making of an Englishman The dark young man who had just come out of Holy-well Street, a little uncertain, as if he had lost his way, crossed the Strand with hesitation. He drew back as some hansoms came careering towards him, made as if to return to the pavement, then ran across to St. Clement Dane's. He paused awhile on the island, looked at the faintly red sky over the Cecil. There was dubiousness in his movements, the dubiousness of the stranger in a large town, who is anxious to find his way and, because of his pride, reluctant to ask it; there was interest too, the stranger's revealing interest in houses with unfamiliar faces, in the traffic which in foreign lands so perversely clings to the wrong side of the street. At last he seemed to muster resolution as he turned eastwards. Some minutes had elapsed since the booming of the quarter from the bells of the nearest church, and as the young man stopped again to look at the Griffin, he seemed to listen to the endless confirmation of the surrounding chimes. They came muffled and faint after their long journey from St. Paul's and Westminster, shrill from St. Dunstan's and the Chapel Royal; the chimes seemed crisp and aloof, detached in aristocratic fashion from the rumble of the omnibuses and the sharper clip-trop-trop of the cab horses. The dark young man walked slowly, his eyes and ears very aware of all this unfamiliarity and its intimations of unpenetrated mysteries.
