This thesis examines how the medical funeral ceremony shapes the performance and its functions of piphat-mon music in the medical funeral ceremony of the Faculty of Medicine, Srinakharinwirot University (SWU) in Bangkok, Thailand. Modern Thai society has influenced many aspects of traditional culture including funeral rites. The medical funeral is a modern ritual conducted for "great teachers," the remains of those who have donated their bodies for medical education and research. Both the traditional and medical funeral events include music for accompanying the ritual. This thesis will focus on the variations between traditional and medical funeral settings that reflect traditional cultures and modernization in Thai society.
