That this improvement has occurred is not necessarily evidence that the book has been instrumental in bringing it about, but expressions of opinion from various officers have led me to think it a possible factor, and have in that way encouraged me to revise and in parts rewrite it, while a supplementary chapter has been added, in the belief that interest in the subject entitles the reader to a knowledge of advances more recently made, and in the hope that such interest and the usefulness of the book may be increased.
