The weapon did not look like anything special, yet the Knife-smith knew it held great power. As he rotated it in the firelight cast from the forge, the blade disappeared and then reappeared like magic. He would have thought he was hallucinating if it had not been for the time when his daughter had touched the weapon, during the crafting of the dagger. He had always known she was a gift from God and her abilities were yet to be fully developed or understood but when she had held the dagger, the hollow hilt had glowed with what looked like golden grains of sand. The Smith had not been sure why he had even embarked on forging such an unusual weapon, but the vision of the short sword had come to him in his dreams and he had felt a sense of urgency that encouraged him to create the blade. Only time would tell what purpose the dagger would serve.

The ancient world often thought in terms of physiognomics—the idea that character can be discerned by studying outward, physical features. That physical descriptions carry moral freight in characterization has been largely missed in modern biblical scholarship, and this study brings that to the forefront. Specifically, this is a study of one particular physical marker—blindness. When we look at Greco-Roman literature, a kind of literary topos begins to emerge, a set of assumptions that ancient audiences would typically make when encountering blind characters. Luke-Acts makes use of such a topos in a way that becomes programmatic, serving as a kind of interpretive key to Luke-Acts that is generally unnoticed in modern scholarship.
