On the Success of Failure addresses whether repeating a grade is helpful or harmful when children are not keeping up. It describes the school context of retention and evaluates its consequences by tracking the experiences of a large, representative sample of Baltimore school children from first grade through high school. This paper examines the effect retention or lack of retention policies have on the achievement of urban middle school students. Questions addressed in this paper such as, does retention improve or inhibit the attainment of skills that students need to survive in school, and does retaining a student increase the likelihood a student will dropout of school, will be answered. The research also investigates interventions to implement to avoid retention and social promotion as well as alternatives and strategies to address the retention-non-retention issue. A summarized comprehensive literature review is provided in this paper as well as a table describing all major findings from past research; most proving a strong relationship between being retained and dropout status. This paper will discuss how students feel about retention practices and how students feel being retained is more stressful than going blind and or losing a parent. Although the literature does reveal some studies that claim to link retention with improved student performance, even fewer claim any sustained benefits, and the majority of all studies does not find any positive results from grade retention. In most cases, achievement and self-esteem are proven to drop after being retained, ultimately resulting into a student who drops out. This research study explores what individual teachers can do to raise achievement within the classroom as well as describes strategies that both a school system and teacher could implement in order to maximize learning. In this paper, the interventions focus on four key areas: daily instruction practices, individual student attention, parent involvement, and professional development.
