Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of limited range of motion (ROM) isokinetic knee extensor exercise on isometric strength development inside and outside the trained ROM. Four male and 18 female volunteers between the ages of 20 and 48 years were randomly assigned to one of two groups. The experimental group trained the knee extensors isokinetically on the KINCOM from 45 to 0 degrees of knee flexion three times a week for five weeks. The control group did not train. Both groups were pretested and posttested on the KINCOM for isometric knee extensor peak torque at 15, 25, 35, 55, 65 and 75 degrees of knee flexion. One half of the subjects in each group was tested at each angle in ascending order, while the other half was tested in descending order. The two orders of testing were randomly assigned and balanced over subjects with a matching procedure. Repeated-measures ANOVA with one between groups factor was used to determine if significant differences existed between the groups. Tukey's Honestly Significantly Different test was used to make pairwise comparisons between group means at each angle. Skeletal muscle is a major active mechanism of impact force attenuation in human movement. During the landing phase impact attenuation is achieved through eccentric contraction of the muscles of the lower extremity. However, few studies have investigated the effects of knee strength, especially eccentric strength, on impact attenuation during landing. Therefore the relationship was assessed in fourteen healthy, male volunteers. Seven NCAA Division I College football players (TRAINED) and seven recreationally active university students with limited sport training or competitive sport background (REC) participated in two testing sessions. Isokinetic testing of the knee extensor and flexor muscles was performed concentrically at 60 and 180 degree·sec−1, and eccentrically at 60 degree·sec−1. 3D kinematic and ground reaction force (GRF) data were collected during drop landings from heights of 40, 60cm and 100% of each individuals maximum jump height. The TRAINED had greater concentric strength, vertical jump height, but no significant differences existed in the eccentric strength (336 vs 340 N.m/kg) between the groups. The TRAINED had marginally greater peak GRFs (2.7 & 3.5 BW vs 2.0 & 2.7 BW for 40 and 60 cm, p=0.051) and significantly less time to the peak (0.048 & 0.043 s vs 0.060 & 0.053) compared to the REC in drop landing. The TRAINED used less but non-significant knee flexion range of motion ( -60.7 & -54.1 degree vs -62.7 & -69.6 degree) during drop landing than the REC. There were high, positive and significant correlations between the peak eccentric knee extensor torque and time to the first and second peak GRF. Despite all their training the results did not find any significant differences in eccentric strength of the TRAINED subjects in comparison to their REC counterparts. The TRAINED subjects adopted a stiffer landing strategy to deal effectively with high impact loading during landing. Future research is warranted in investigating impact attenuation in landing of participants with significantly different eccentric strength.

Strength is one characteristic that most athletes focus on improving as it is a critical element for success. It is believed that some micro-tearing of the muscle tissue occurs daily in routine activities and during regular exercise. Any restriction or imbalance within the musculoskeletal structure can affect optimal range of motion which then can affect the quality of force production, force application, and movement efficacy. Nontraditional treatments are beginning to be investigated to examine their effects on strength and a few techniques are slowly gaining popularity are the Graston Technique (GT) and Whole Body Vibration (WBV). Clinicians might apply the GT before practice or competition to break down adhesions to allow the muscle to function freely or use WBV to stimulate the neuromuscular system. However, the use of the GT or WBV may possibly leave the athlete susceptible to injury if strength is diminished in the process. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to address the potential acute effects of the GT and WBV on peak isokinetic torque and fatigue of the quadriceps during maximal voluntary contraction. The secondary purpose is to compare the individual effects between the GT and WBV on strength and fatigue following an acute exercise protocol. METHODS: Subjects were randomly selected into three groups: the GT, WBV and control. Each subject completed their group protocol a week after the pre-test. Peak isokinetic torque, total work and work fatigue values were collected pre-test and post-test using the Thorstennson protocol on the Biodex dynamometer 4.0. Following data collection, independent sample t-tests and a one-way ANOVA were performed on SPSS Statistics to analyze the data. RESULTS: Peak isokinetic torque and work fatigue decreased following each intervention. There was no significant difference between pre-test and post-test or between groups. Total work only increased in the GT but not significantly when compared to the WBV and control group. CONCLUSION: Based on the results, it is safe to assume that the GT and WBV is not better or worse than resting for 5 minutes before practice or competition when it comes to strength and fatigue.
