Abstract: This study examined the effects of a direct instruction and graphic organizer intervention package on the quality and quantity of persuasive writing of middle school students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Quality of students' writing was measured via analytical rubric scores and correct word sequences. Quantity was measured by assessing total words written. Students were between the ages of 12 and 14, and all four participants had been diagnosed with ASD. A multiple-baseline across participants design was used to evaluate intervention effectiveness. Findings indicated that the quality and quantity of the students' persuasive writing improved as a result of the intervention.

Many students on the autism spectrum display a strong ability to process and comprehend information at elevated levels when presented with it visually. Despite this, students who have autism are increasingly being educated in general education content classrooms that utilize lessons directed to whole groups of students and limit the use of visually presented material. For some students with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), this presentation introduces difficulties related to attention as well as comprehension and retention of material. Research indicates promising results associated with using a graphic organizer to increase comprehension accuracy in students who answer wh-questions following the reading of a short passage. The purpose of this study was to document the relationship between using a graphic organizer and increasing reading comprehension. The study employed a single-subject multiple baseline design across participants to evaluate if the use of a graphic organizer impacted the correctness of answering wh-questions for grade-level social studies content. Participants included four eighth grade students in an urban public school who had been diagnosed with ASD. Results supported research by showing an increase in comprehension skills with the use of a graphic organizer.

At present, graphic organizers have become recognized instructional tools to help support students as they write. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of paper-based and digital graphic organizers to improve persuasive writing of fourth and fifth grade students. A quasi-experimental study with a comparison design with pre-test and post-tests was used with the switching replication method. The population consists of sixty-seven public and private school students in fourth and fifth grade. The most prominent results indicate that the use of a digital graphic organizer first, leads to significant improvements in the following five writing outcome areas: goal statements, reasoning statements, supporting arguments, conclusion statements, and overall scores. Likewise, female students also showed significant improvements in all five writing outcomes. Comparable to digital, the use of paper-based graphic organizers first, resulted in significant improvements in three areas: supporting arguments, conclusion statements, and overall scores. For older students (aged 10-11), the use of both paper-based and digital graphic organizers first, leads to significant improvements in the following five writing outcome areas: goal statements, reasoning statements, supporting arguments, conclusion statements, and overall scores. The overall results indicate that graphic organizers yield significant improvements in the persuasive writing of fourth and fifth grade students. Furthermore, a consistent finding throughout this study is that the use of paper-based and digital graphic organizers results in significant improvements in these three areas: supporting arguments, conclusion statements, and overall scores.

Writing at the high school level requires higher cognitive and literacy skills. Educators must decide the strategies best suited for the varying skills of each process. Compounding this issue is the need to instruct students with learning disabilities. Writing for students with learning disabilities is a struggle at minimum; teachers have to find a way to instruct students on how to write so they can meet the necessary demands of post-secondary education and the workforce. Working and learning in the 21st century also brings in the aspect of using technology to instruct students. The focus of this research will be to determine the effectiveness of using technology and graphic organizers to teach the pre-writing process. The pre-writing process is the most important stage of writing; a stage students with learning disabilities struggle with the most, and routinely spend the least amount of time on.
