ABSTRACT: The purpose of this thesis was to examine the self-fulfilling prophecy relative to the possible effects that an expectancy placed on a player by a coach can have on that athlete's motivation to continue practicing their sport. Male and female softball coaches (n = 8) over the age of 18, and female softball athletes (n = 85) between the ages of 12 and 17 years old participated in this study. Coaches completed the Coach Questionnaire which was developed by the researcher. Athletes completed the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS), the Physical Self-Perception Profile sport competency section (PSPP), and the Coaching Behavior Assessment System Perceived Behavior Scale (CBAS-PBS). Athletes were assigned colored wristbands in an attempt to manipulate coaches' expectations. Athletes were labeled as either low expectancy or high expectancy athletes by the coaches, and were used for comparison throughout the study.

This concurrent, embedded mixed methods study used predominantly quantitative analyses to examine coach expectations and behaviors on female athletes' intrinsic motivation to play softball. Qualitative methods in the form of structured, open-ended questions were used to enhance the data by examining athletes' perceptions of coaching behavior and changes in motivation and competence levels. A cluster sampling technique was used to randomly select 20 Division I softball teams competing in the United States. The resulting quantitative participant sample included 174 female collegiate athletes ranging in age from 18-22 years old, and 20 male and female head coach participants ranging in age from 24-60 plus years. Qualitative procedures involved inductive content analysis of interview responses from 41 female collegiate softball athletes. A structured interview protocol was followed to answer the research questions of how do female athletes' perceive head coaches affect intrinsic motivation to play softball for their current team, and specifically, what types of coaching behaviors do athletes perceive to alter their motivation to play softball? Results of this study indicate coaches do form expectations about athletes' performance ability, and coaching behaviors differed between expectancy groups. Competence and motivation levels remained constant over the course of the study, but expectancy groups were motivated differently. Low expectancy athletes were more extrinsically motivated, and showed trends of higher levels of amotivation than high and average expectancy athletes. High expectancy athletes showed trends indicating more intrinsic motivation overall. Low expectancy athletes perceived more ignoring, or non-rewarding, behaviors than other athletes. Athletes experienced a decrease in encouragement and corrective instruction from pre- to post-study. Overall, athletes reported aspects of the perceived coach-athlete relationship affected competence and motivation the most. Relationships characterized by open, direct, clear communication were the biggest positive influence on motivation and competence. Other coach strategies including emphasis of athlete's personal best, actions display confidence in the athlete's performance ability, and encouragement after performance attempts emerged as important factors enhancing athlete self-perception variables. Relationships characterized by unclear or no communication had the biggest negative influence on motivation and competence.

Sport is a medium through which the leader can greatly influence the consequences. The purpose of this research was to examine the ways in which perceived coach leadership behaviors impact perceptions of coaching performance, individual athlete performance, team performance, and lifelong outcomes. In this study, two hundred seventy nine former student-athletes were asked to recall and report on the experiences they had as an athlete during high school along with specific lifelong outcomes (e.g., confidence, control etc.). Student judgment of their coaches' types of behavior, (e.g., Democratic vs. Autocratic) was compared with perceptions of their coach's performance, their individual performance, their team's performance and various lifelong outcomes. Results revealed that Training and Instruction, Social Support, and Positive Feedback were related to Coach Performance. Training and Instruction and Democratic Behaviors were related to Individual Athlete Performance. Training and Instruction and Positive Feedback were related to Team Performance. Social Support structures were related to Athlete Challenge. Training and Instruction was related to Athlete Confidence in Abilities and overall Lifelong Outcomes. Autocratic Behaviors were related to Athlete Control of Emotions. Training and Instruction was found to be related to every short-term performance component. Coaches seeking to impact performance of their teams can do so by utilizing these leadership behaviors. Many of these behaviors also have a long-term positive effect on the individual. Sport managers seeking to satisfy the goals of the organization may employ these leadership behaviors to select, train, and evaluate staff members to increase the overall effectiveness of the organization.
