Book Description
Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, 1911, Vol. 14: Assisted by the Faculty of the Eclectic Medical College of the City of New York It is estimated by surgeon-general Wyman that the record for 1910 Will show upward of cases of infantile paralysis in the United States. During the past year it has occurred epidemically over an ever widening territory. Dr. W. H. Frost, of the Marine Hospital Service, after a long series of investigations, is unable to assign any positive cause for the peculiar disease. It is thought by some investigators that the disease will break out with virulence next year. It has been stated by a number of physicians of a considerable experience that this not very well understood disease is best man aged by careful quarantine and the administration of form'in for its specific action on the cerebro-spinal fluid, the dose to be regulated according to the age of the patient. Of course the use of formin does not exclude the employment of such other remedies as may be indicated by the symptoms. Book Description
Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, Vol. 2: MDCCCXXXVII, July December An ancient University, richly endowed, thronged with candidates for the learned professions, frequented by the aristocracy of the country, and the only theological school for half the clergy of the national church; is an Institution too efficient for good and evil to be looked at with indifference by a wise man and a Christian. Those who are not its members, must not be supposed to have no interest in its condition, and no right to desire its improvement. Whether it be or be not technically a National system, it is necessarily in effect national. Its estates lie in every county, its scholars come from every county; its graduates spread over the whole kingdom, bringing with them the lessons of good or evil which they have imbibed: and signally as a main foundation whence the national clergy are supplied, the University of Oxford affects the welfare of the nation. It is idle then to pretend, that the nation may take no cognizance of so extensive and formidable an organization, because forsooth we must respect the last Wills and Testaments of certain founders and benefactors. If a man leaves his estates for purposes, which after several centuries are found to generate a public nuisance, is his Will to be respected? In truth, it is difficult to repress the thought, that only pure hypocrisy dictates such pretended reverence for the wills of founders. Book Description
Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, Vol. 4: MDCCCXXXVIII; July-December Art. I. Lectures on the Establishment and Extension of National Churches. Delivered in London, from April 25th to May 12, 1838. By Thomas Chalmers, D.D., and LL.D., Professor of Theology in the University of Edinburgh, &c. 8vo. Glasgow: Collins. 1838. The gentlemen who call themselves 'The Christian Influence Society, ' at whose request these Lectures were undertaken, and are now published, must, we think, feel not a little chagrin and disappointment at the abortive result of their exertions. Not only have they failed of their main object, which was to forward the Scottish Church-extension scheme by bringing up from the North its author and champion to enlighten the polite world upon the question, and thereby to influence the decision of Government; but they have exposed to closer observation the weakness of the cause which Dr. Chalmers has been put forward to advocate. The grounds upon which the Lecturer rests his vindication of Establishments, are so paradoxical as to bring the soundness of his judgment into question even with his own party; and his concessions to the Voluntaries and the Dissenters must have been far more displeasing to the high-church portion of his auditors, than his arguments were acceptable. We are much mistaken, if the reputation of Dr. Chalmers in the metropolis did not stand much higher before he delivered these Lectures, than it has since their publication. The political purpose which the Lectures were obviously intended to promote, was not indeed avowed. The Times newspaper, in an elaborate announcement of the intended course, affirmed distinctly, that they would not 'involve in the slightest degree a spirit of political partizanship, or any reflections on the policy of Government in regard to Church Extension.'
