Book Description
"This study aims to trace the development of Islamic theological discourse in Indonesia, from the early 1900s to the end of the twentieth century. It will focus on how modernist Muslims have constructed their theological thought throughout the century, which, in turn, reflects their religious understanding in response to the particular demands of their age. The modernist theological thought constructed so far signifies a continuum of progress, developing from one stage to the next. Implicitly, this progress also indicates the improvement of Indonesian Muslims' understanding of their own religion, which may suggest the betterment of their commitment to doctrinal beliefs and religious practices. Therefore, this study will also examine the ways in which Indonesian Islam noticeably grows more orthodox through these forms of religious commitment. Drawing upon an Indonesian term, the growth of orthodox Islam is known as the santri cultural expansion, which, at least since the last two decades of the century, has been characterized by the vertical (and horizontal) mobility of devoted Muslims in political, cultural and economic enterprises. As well, this study will include a discussion of the theological thought underlying that santri cultural expansion." --

Book Description
Islamic Post-Traditionalism in Indonesia offers a unique assessment of the development of the phenomenon of Islamic post-traditionalism using Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest mass Islamic organization in Indonesia (and the world) as a case study. Post-traditionalism is a term now widely used to describe the often controversial attempts by progressive reformers to reify and legitimize modern intellectual notions, often from non-Islamic sources, by using reference to terminology and ideas drawn from Islamic tradition. This book discusses the discourse of post-traditionalist thought within Islamic thought more widely, before turning to examine the emergence of new currents of progressive thought within NU in Indonesia and the factors that influence that. In particular, the book explores the sometimes fiery struggle between liberal and conservative thought in NU; and the position of post-traditionalist thought in the wider development of intellectualism in Indonesia. It covers in detail new religious discourses that are being developed and offers important insights into the implications and future for post- traditionalist thought among Muslims. The highly influential Indonesian version of this book was originally published as Post Traditionalisme Islam: Wacana Intelektualisme dalam Komunitas NU by the Fahmina Institute, Indonesia, 2008.

Book Description
The aim of this study is to examine ibn Taymiyyah's theological influence on Indonesian Muslim Revivalists, specifically the three revivalists who were leaders of revival movements in Indonesia in the early twentieth century, namely Ahmad Dahlan, Aḥmad Surkatti and Ahmad Hassan. Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728/1327) was one of the Muslim scholars who reformed Islamic religious thought in the early thirteenth century. Ibn Taymiyyah's thought on theology, specifically 'aqīdah has considerably influenced Muslim scholarship not only in his own time but the present as well. The three Indonesian Muslim revivalists were well known figures in the early twentieth century who called Muslims to purify their 'aqidah based on the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah through their reformist organizations. In that period, the 'aqidah of some Indonesian Muslims deviated from Islamic teachings. Thus, it is very essential to investigate the influence of Ibn Taymiyyah's theology specifically, his 'aqidah on the three Indonesian Muslim revivalists in dealing with the circumstances of Muslims' 'aqidah in their period, and their way in disseminating their comprehension of 'aqidah based on the teachings of the al-salaf al-ṣaliḥ. In this research, the approach that has been implemented is textual analysis, using descriptive and analytical methods referring to numerous works on the subject as well as the deductive method to obtain conclusions for this study. This study pursues to ascertain Ibn Taymiyyah's theological influence on these three Indonesian Muslim revivalists. It concludes that their understanding and teachings of 'aqidah are clearly influenced by Ibn Taymiyyah's thought.

Book Description
"Defending Traditional Islam in Indonesia examines the rise of young preachers of Arab descent (habaib) and their sermon groups in the region and shows how Islam and politics coexist, flourish, interlace, and strive in Indonesia in complex, pragmatic, and mutually beneficial relationships. The book argues that the emergence of Arab preachers in the late 1990s, when traditional forms of Islamic authority came under growing challenge from a diverse array of Muslim groups and ideologies, is closely tied to contestation between traditionalists and their puritanical rivals, the Salafi-Wahhabi. Not only have the habaib featured prominently in defending traditionalism, they have also used this contestation as an opportunity to build their authority and religious capital through marketisation and their ties to the Middle East. The author explores the ways in which habaib promote themselves to the mostly young urban, Muslim community, and also analyses the use of new media and marketing strategies by habaib to attract young followers. The use of merchandise utilising popular culture and group identity markers is especially salient in the preachers' outreach to urban audiences. In addition, public staging and entertainment during preaching activities are means by which the habaib cast their Islamic preaching (dakwah) as the Prophet's mission and encourage their followers' participation. A novel socio-cultural and religious study and a contribution to the growing discussion on new media, market, and religion, this book will be of interest to anthropologists, social scientists and area studies scholars interested in Indonesia, Southeast Asia and Islamic studies"--
