Book Description
Excerpt from The Destinies of the Stars When Dr. Svante Arrhenius in the year 1903 received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry it came as a fitting reward of his achievements principally in the electro-chemical field. It was natural, however, that a genius of his calibre would not limit his interest to the "infinitely small" but would gradually broaden it to encompass the "infinitely large." And "to take an interest" means with Dr. Arrhenius to push the boundaries of the unknown and of the unexplored a little farther away from man. His evolution in this respect runs parallel with that of all the great men who stand out as leaders in the history of science. Book Description
Excerpt from What We Know About the Stars But every intelligent person should do more than merely spy out what his own eyes will see. He should have some real knowledge of what we know about the stars, - their distances, move ments, variableness, inter-relations their probable origin, progress as stars, possible destiny. The subject popularly treated is not so diļ¬‚icult of understanding in many of its branches, and is by no means fanciful. Astronomy is a real thing; a genuine manifestation of the manifold glories of past ages; a presage of new evolutions in the future; a rescript of the visible thought and mind of God. It is another open book of Revelation, and, like the Bible itself, is both milk for the babe and meat for the strong. Of course we do not mean to say that astron omy is so exact a science that all its problems are as demonstrable as a problem in Euclid. There are mere guesses connected with it, but these only surround its truths with a halo of romance. So far as real problems are solved it is an exact science. That the astronomers are enabled to cal culate, hundreds of years in advance, the precise moment of the transit of Venus across the Sun, or of an eclipse of the sun or moon, or when a cer tain comet is due to appear, only proves that facts have been acquired which are exact, and that the machinery of the heavens does not run on by chance but under fixed laws. Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief.
