Book Description
Excerpt from The Dental Record, 1893, Vol. 13: A Monthly Journal of Dental Science, Art, and Literature, Devoted to the Interest of the Profession The first real step in the use of electricity is dentistry, with the exception of some plating and dipping processes in the workroom, was the invention, in 187 5, of the electric mallet, since brought to such high perfection by Dr. Bonwill, an American practitioner, who has shown himself to be possessed of very high mechanical ability. The action of this instrument is very simple. An electro magnet is placed in such a position as to act on a mallet of iron, which is kept apart from the coils by a small spiral Spring. When this mallet is acted upon by the passage of the electric current through the helix of the electro-magnet it taps the end Of the plugger, and at the same time breaking the contact of the circuit, it falls back released; and the blow is again repeated in a similar manner. The mallet is controlled by a small plate on the right side of the instrument, which, when pressed forward by the first finger of the Operator, completes the circuit, and thus causes the malleting to commence. A slot on the Opposite side of the vulcanite hand piece enables the manipulator to turn the plugger in any desired direction with the thumb. SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY The School of Dentistry is passing through the experience which prevails with professional schools as entrance requirements are raised, or the course lengthened. This year for the first time the dental course outlined by the Dental Faculties' Association of American Universities was put into effect. Although the opportunities for the practice of dentistry are greatly increased by reason of the number of dentists now connected with the Army, and although the Government is still looking for men proficient in dentistry, so that the promise of opportunities for lucrative practice is encouraging, yet less than one-half of the number heretofore entering the Freshman class enrolled as Freshmen this year. There may have been contributing causes, but apparently the main cause of the shrinkage is due to the fact that four years are now required in the dental schools, as compared with three hitherto. It is probable that the number attending the dental schools which conform to these new requirements will be relatively small for some years, since, if the present plans prevail, the public will scarcely be adjusted to the new requirements before one year of college work will be a prerequisite for admission to the four-year dental course, and (as now expected) in 1925, two years of prescribed college work will be required as a prerequisite for the four-year dental course. This entire program recognizes the vital relation between dentistry and medicine, and it will not be surprising if by the time the plan is fully matured, dentistry will be considered as a department of medicine, and dental...

Book Description
Excerpt from The Dental Cosmos, 1871, Vol. 13: A Monthly Record of Dental Science, Devoted to the Interests of the Profession Truth crushed to earth will rise again; The eternal years of god are hers. In all these ebbs and flows may be traced a reason for the changes; there is in the use of this instrument a happy medium, which is a solu tion to the dispute. The governing principle has been forgotten, and in the turmoil personalities have been substituted with disastrous results to both sides-since both lose by going too far. DO we not Operate to save teeth and make them useful? If so, we at once have the fundamental point of the argument in a few proposi tions.
