Book Description
Excerpt from The Construction of Roads and Streets, Vol. 1 of 2: In Two Parts The present work consists of two parts. The first comprises "The Art of Constructing Common Roads," by Mr. Henry Law, revised and condensed; the second consists of "The Recent Practice in the Construction of Roads and Streets," by Mr. D. Kinnear Clark, C. E., in the investigation of which he has been indebted for much material to the excellent Reports of Lieutenant-Colonel Haywood, Engineer and Surveyor to the Commissioners of Sewers of the City of London. The whole is preceded by an historical sketch of the subject, also by Mr. Clark. The City of London is a microcosm of the best and most varied experience in carriage-way construction, under the superintendence of the Engineer who has lucidly described the various structures which have, from time to time, been laid down and tried, in a catholic spirit, and has recorded the results of his experience, in a series of Reports ranging over a period of thirty years from 1848 to 1877. Mr. Clark has endeavoured impartially to set forth the merits and disadvantages of the systems of pavement which have come under his observation, and he believes that the results of his investigations will be useful to others. The varieties of wood pavement and of asphalts pavement which have been laid in the Metropolis - more especially in the City - have been fully described and, it is hoped, fairly criticised. He has also added some illustrative diagrams, and has supplied a new and fuller Index. He has preserved (in the Appendices) the useful material given in former editions on "Rolling New-made Roads," by Sir John Burgoyne; on the "Economy of Bead Maintenance and Horse-Draft through Steam Road-Rolling," by Mr. F. A. Paget (to which he has added a brief Supplementary Sketch); and on the "Condition of Wood and Asphalte Pavements in the City of London," by Colonel Haywood. He has also given the By-laws now in force regarding the Construction of New Streets in the Metropolis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Construction of Roads and Pavements Since the publication of the first edition of The Construction of Roads and Pavements, considerable progress has been made in the field of highway engineering, especially with regard to the construction of rural highways. In the second edition, the errors and omissions of the first edition have been corrected so far as they have been noted and new material has been added where it was apparent that practice had really changed. However, the unsettled conditions that have recently prevailed in the highway field have made it very difficult to determine what was real progress and what was merely compromise construction due to abnormal conditions. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Highway Construction: Designed as a d104-Book and Work of Reference for All Who May Be Engaged in the Location, Construction, or Maintenance of Roads, Streets, and Pavements Although volumes have been written on the subject of highway construction, still the matter is widely scattered through the pages of the standard works on engineering, technical journals and periodicals, in pamphlets and reports of city engineers, and is therefore not always easily accessible when wanted. The author, having found the need of a comprehensive and practical work of reference upon the many subjects connected with highways, has in the following pages endeavored to collate the varied mass of information. In doing so he has derived valuable assistance from the works of the authors mentioned below (which works may be profitably studied by those desiring further information upon the subjects treated of), and takes this method of acknowledging his indebtedness and thanks, instead of inclosing every extract in quotation-marks.
