Book Description
Excerpt from The Construction of Pump Details Attention was called by reviewers of the Author's 'Practical Handbook on Pump Construction' to the lack of details therein, and numerous requests for such information have shown how great is the need for particulars of this kind. It is with pleasure, therefore, that the Author submits this book, trusting that the information given will supply the requirement, at least to some extent. Most of the illustrations are from actual practice, and are drawn to scale. Dimensions are given where possible. Valves are but briefly dealt with, being fairly explained in the 'Practical Handbook on Pump Construction.' The Author wishes it to be clearly understood that here a "pump" implies the hydraulic apparatus used in raising or forcing liquids, and not the steam part, hence the details in this book are strictly confined to the water or hydraulic part of the apparatus. Book Description
Excerpt from Centrifugal Pumps: Their Design and Construction An examination of centrifugal pump literature, published in the English language, yields little information of value to those interested in this subject. The initial development and introduction of high pressure centrifugal pumps were due to the energy and enterprise of European engineers, as was the case in the development of the steam turbine. It is quite natural, therefore, that the best literature upon this subject is published abroad, although even there we find few complete and satisfactory works, the information as a rule being distributed in the technical magazines. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on the Construction and Working of Pumps A pump may be defined as a machine by and through which a fluid can. Be made to flow against the action of gravitation or other opposing force. With most pumps such flow is brought about by the displacing action of a piston or plunger moving within a closed vessel provided with suitable inlet and outlet passages controlled by valves. In some cases we may have to deliver a large volume of water against but a small head, pressure, or resistance, whilst. In others there may be only a small volume of water to be delivered but a great resistance to be pumped against, and it is evident that although similar parts are to be found in pumps for these and other services, their precise construction, arrangement, and relative dimensions must vary with the nature of the work to be performed. We will, however, first consider certain laws and conditions applicable to the working of pumping machinery in general, before proceeding to discuss some typical examples in detail. Book Description
Excerpt from Pumps and Pumping: A Hand-Book for Pump Users; Being Notes on Selection, Construction, and Management Hand-book for Steam Users has induced him to write the following pages on similar lines. The literature likely to be of service to pump users hitherto published has been extremely scanty, and it is hoped, therefore, that the notes to be found herein may prove acceptable and useful. Within the scope of the work it has been impossible to notice all the varied pump combinations, and some of the remarks made must be considered general and not exhaustive. Some notes on design will be found interspersed with the text, but the author wishes it to be under stood that the book is not intended as a treatise on the construction of pumps. The matter has been condensed as much as possible, and is arranged in the form of headed paragraphs for easy reference. Book Description
Excerpt from Pumping Machinery a Treatise on the History, Design, Construction, and Operation of Various, Forms of Pumps The book is intended for the use of those Who have studied hydraulics, mechanics, and the strength of materials. It is intended to develop certain general principles of mechanics Which are applicable to pumping machinery as Well as to train the, student in application of certain of the theoretical portions of the studies of an engineering course. The first two chapters are devoted to the development of pumping machinery, because the author feels the need, of all engineers, of a more intimate knowledge of the great works of the early members of the profession. The pump is so closely allied With the steam engine in early times that this history traces the early ferms of that machine. The historical works mentioned in the list of text-books in the bibliography as well as the historical articles given in the same catalogue have been indispensable in the preparation of these chapters. Book Description
Excerpt from Construction and Test of A 1 1-2 Inch Centrifugal Pump Description OF pump tested was a single stage centrifugal pump with an impeller eight inches in diameter. The impeller was made of bronze, while the other parts of the machine, with the exception of the shaft, were of cast iron. The impeller or rotor carried four vanes of the open type and was finished all over. The water entered the pump at the center of one side, and leaving the periphery of the impeller, passed into the volute or outer cas1ng, and from thence out through the vertical discharge pipe. The water from the discharge pipe passed through a weir box into a tank from which the suction pipe again.
