Book Description
Excerpt from The Conditions and Prospects of the Protestant Episcopal Church Such being our sad condition, what must we think of those who endeavor to cover up the whole matter, and cry peace, peace, when there is no peace? What must We think of such men? IS it not to be feared that the character of too many of them'may be learned in the parable of the tares While men slept the enemy came and sowed tares. These professed friends of the church wish us to sleep on. Why, say they, disturb the peace of the church?' There is no reason for apprehension all is well; or, at least, will turn out well, if we only keep Still. Thus do they, with good words and fair Speeches, deceive the hearts Of the simple. And when this smooth course 'fails; and men cannot be cajoled, but will lift up the voice of honest alarm; why then they' must be branded as disturbers of the church, and their influence in this way be destroyed. Thus do these men endeavor to Quiet every fear, hinder an investigation, and suppress every faithful remonstrance. What, then, professed friends Of the church sowed tares while men slept.
