For U3O8, UO3 and ammonium diuranate, the sample is dissolved in nitric acid; for UF4, a mixture of nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide is used. After fuming with sulphuric acid to eliminate the nitrate and fluoride ions, titanium thiocyanate is formed by the addition of ammonium thiocyanate, and the complex is extracted into tri-n-octylphosphine oxide. The transmittance of the resulting yellow solution is a measure of the titanium concentration.
