Book Description
Excerpt from The Client Princes of the Roman Empire Under the Republic The main part of this essay deals with the acts and functions which constituted the clientship of the kings who came under the influence of the Roman Republic. The vagueness of this clientship made it necessary to prefix a discussion as to the technical position which the kings occupied by treaty, as friends or allies. A bare outline of the clientship of the more important kings of Africa and Asia is supplied by the collection of quotations in the larger of the two Appendices. While this essay was in course of preparation for the press, there appeared in the Classical Quarterly (July, 1907) a thesis by Miss L. E. Matthaei, which discussed the classification of the Roman allies in general, and since some of her conclusions were arrived at independently in Part I of this essay, it may be as well to mention in what respects the two dissertations coincide.
