Book Description
Excerpt from The City of Genoa It is to be feared that the greater number of English people who go to Genoa in order to learn something of the city and its inhabitants fail in completely achieving their object. It is not enough to visit her streets, churches and palaces in succession with guide-book - however trustworthy - in hand. The stranger may indeed succeed in this way in becoming familiar with the aspect of her public buildings and thoroughfares, and may learn much about the Genoese school of painting, and of the artists who worked in Genoa, but the everyday life of the populace will escape him. To come in contact with that - to see the Genoese and to know them, to realise their character, and the things which make up the sum of their existence, you must climb up the stairways which do duty for streets, or go down the maze of side alleys near the Piazzo di Sarzana behind the old wall: streets so narrow that you may touch the houses on both sides as you pass, and across which stretches row after row of snow-white linen so that the view of the sky is almost shut out. In the dingy shops you will see macaroni, mousetraps and "Madonnas" exhibited for sale behind the same dim sheet of glass. Book Description
Excerpt from Genoa: How the Republic Rose and Fell The history of a powerful naval and commercial commonwealth, which indeed occupied but a small speck of Europe but which through its colonies and research spread an influence over the then known world, must be regarded by the Anglo-Saxon race with especial interest, as forming one of the steps in that ladder of progress by which we have succeeded in attaining such a pitch of commercial prosperity. Beneath us on this ladder are the Dutch, Hanseatic, Portuguese, Venetian, and Genoese steps, each and all assisting us out of that maze of barbarism which was incident on the fall of the Roman Empire. The Italian Republics were the first to succeed in substantially gathering together the threads of commerce which had been known to the old world of Ph nician, Greek, and Roman merchants, and when this firm foothold had once been re-established, the upward progress was greatly simplified. Pisa and Amalfi were amongst the first to assist in this direction, but Pisa and Amalfi fell powerless before more than mere local prosperity had been attained. Book Description
Excerpt from The Genoa Conference That is the old world - a world which has tortured itself, exhausted itself, shattered itself, almost to final ruin and collapse. The new world has a different faith and a different point of View. It believes in nationalism no less firmly than the old, for nationalism is the individual force, the genius, the salt in every varied impulse which makes up Western Civiliza tion as a whole. But it also believes with its whole heart that in the welter of passion, and in the economic chaos to which the world has been reduced by war, the welfare of every nation depends upon peace, co-operation, a helping hand from the strong to the weak, a regard for the welfare of all. The British Empire Delegation stood for that faith at Genoa, and had behind it, as I believe, the goodwill and the deep desire of a majority of all true democracies throughout the world. The campaign for peace is only beginning. We have won positions from which we must press forward again. We are bivouacked on the field. We must not rest till we have won. Book Description
Excerpt from Italian Days and Ways Our welcome to Genoa was not particularly cheer ful. It had been raining for days; the sky was heavy with clouds, and the air chilly and damp. We can well understand why the prudent and all-informing Baedeker advises invalids visiting Genoa at this time to guard against raw winds and abrupt changes of temperature. We enjoyed coming into the fine harbor, around which Genoa is built upon its hills and terraces in the form of a half - circle, the city widening out toward the ends of the arc. On the hills, we know, are many beautiful villas, seen today but dimly through veils of mist, and beyond are the mountains, which in clear weather must add much to the charm of this old fortress as seen from the sea.
