Book Description
Excerpt from The Church at Home and Abroad, 1892, Vol. 12: Published Monthly On Wednesday, May 11, a train of cars, one of which was filled with ministers, elders and women on their way to Port land, left St. Louis, westward bound. About seven o'clock the next morning, we crossed the Missouri into Kansas City, where we were to have three hours to see the sights of that sightly city beside its name-sake, separated from it only by the invisible state line between Missouri and Kansas. Thus what is naturally one city, already great and rapidly growing, is municipally two because it lies in two states. Let the two vie with each other in the strife of our times for more whole some municipal government, and let the churches provoke each other to wholesome emulation in city evangelization. Book Description
Excerpt from The Church at Home and Abroad, 1889, Vol. 5 Rev. Edward Chester, M.D., of the Mad ras Mission of the American Board, has been feeling the pulse, as he expresses it, of the American churches. In one church not a thousand miles from Boston he was permitted to speak on missions, the church having no pastor. He was told at the close of the service that it was the first missionary sermon that had been delivered in that pul pit in fifteen years. On the whole, Dr. Chester thinks that there is a more normal pulse upon the subject of foreign mis sions than there was fifteen years ago. At that time he visited a church in Maine, where it required three quarters of an hour to persuade the pastor that it was a good thing to have a talk on foreign missions. 'he car ried his point at last because earnestly sup ported by the pastor's mother. There were several sea captains in the church who did not believe in foreign missions, and their sedative influence was supposed to be greater than it should have been with the pastor. There are still many churches on whose wrist it would be well for this beloved physician to lay his professional finger.
