Young. Therefore, as he was, when he first appeared in the character of a public preacher, he soon surpassed the most eminent preachers of those times, in solidity of 'matter, in strength of reasoning, and true pulpit eloquence. In the mean time he entered Into a marriage, in 1707, with Mrs. Judith Fountaine, descended from a good famil in Yorkshire, in whom he was very happy all his life. He had a lit tle before commenced D. D. And upon the resignation v f Sir William Dawes, romoted to the archbishopric of York, Y)r. Sherlock succeeded him in the mastershi ofcatharine Hall in 1714. Having o tained the deanry of Chi chester in [716, and not long after it, he made his first appearance in print, being at the head of the contra-verey against Dr. Hoadly, then Bish 'p of Bangor, during which he published a great number of pieces, one of the prin. Cipal whereof was entitled, A Vindica tion of the Corporaritm and Test Acts, in answer to the Bishop of Bangor's Reasons for the Repeal of them to which 18 added a second part. Concern. Ing the religion of oaths, 1718. The Bishop of Bangor answered it in 1719, to which our Dean replied the same year in a small pamphlet, where in he sets forth The true meaning and intention of the Ctnporation and Test Acts asserted. About three years after this, came out Mr. Collins's discourse of the grounds and reasons of the Christian religion, wherein he endea voura to fix the evidence of it chie y, if not solely, upon the prophecies of the Old Testament, and then acclaim those prephecies 'm such 3.
