Book Description
Blood Clotting Enzymology covers the mechanisms of blood clotting and their role in thrombosis, hemostasis, and many associated ramifications. This book is composed of 12 chapters that consider the integration of knowledge on blood clotting enzymology with hemostasis physiology. The opening chapter deals with the enzymology of the sol-gel transformation was studied in terms of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, surface physics, immunology, biophysical mechanisms, structural architecture, vitamin K and its antagonists, and the rheology of the blood. The subsequent chapters review the biophysical properties and composition of active substance in blood coagulation, as well as the concepts of prothrombin activation. These topics are followed by discussions on the chemical and physicochemical properties of fibrinogen and fibrin; the application of immulogical methods to delineate important properties of plasma constituents; and the mechanisms of antithrombin activity. Other chapters tackle the importance of hirudin and cobra venom for certain experimental laboratory work in the study of the physiology of blood coagulation. The final chapters survey the role of platelets in hemostasis, bleeding disorders, and the chemistry and function of vitamin K in blood coagulation. This book will prove useful to hematologists, enzyme scientist, immunologists, and research workers who are interested in blood coagulation mechanisms.

Book Description
A practical guide to laboratory diagnosis and treatment of hemostatic disorders. This concise book distils the most clinically up-to-date information on thrombotic and bleeding disorders, including the latest treatment strategies, for key conditions and diseases. Essential Guide to Blood Coagulation covers both the stable and the acute stages of hereditary and acquired bleeding and thrombotic disorders. Faced with a bleeding patient, it may be difficult to determine whether blood loss is due to a local factor, or an underlying hemostatic defect. There are a range of laboratory tests which can be performed to identify the cause of bleeding in a patient. This book highlights the tests that can be used in the laboratory to aid diagnosis. Essential Guide to Blood Coagulation has been updated to include the new anticoagulants and now has a dedicated chapter on antiplatelet drugs. This invaluable guide will help all those treating patients to expand their knowledge of hemostatic disorders. Book Description
This is the first book to give complete insight into the biochemistry of blood coagulation, and demonstrates how this field provides important contributions to fundamental biochemistry, such as enzyme kinetics, lipid-protein interactions, oxidative carboxylation, and cell receptors. The book will be of interest both to biochemists and molecular biologists who want to gain insight into the process of blood coagulation, as well as to those already working in the field of blood coagulation who desire to broaden their insight into its molecular aspects.

Book Description
Since 1952, postgraduate courses for practising physicians and speci alists have been given by the Medical Faculty of the University of Leiden in the Boerhaave Quarter, in which most of its clinics and laboratories are located. During these years, recent advances in a wide variety of m~dical fields and subjects have been discussed by distin guished speakers from many countries. The steadily increasing atten dance has shown that, as could be expected from the rapid progress of modern medicine, there is a widely felt need for this form of postgra duate study. In 1957, therefore, the Leiden Medical Faculty appointed a permanent committee for the organization of postgraduate medical education. Of the courses given since then, certain material proved to have sufficient immediate scientific value to justify publication, and it now gives the Committee great pleasure to announce that in collaboration with the Leiden University Press it will publish the Boerhaave Series for Postgraduate Medical Education. The first volume of this new series is the product of the course on Human Blood Coagulation given in Novem ber 1968. It is our hope that this book will prove valuable not only to those who participated in the course but also to many others working in this and associated fields.
