Book Description
Excerpt from The Cavalier in America The twin sponsors of American colonization were two cavaliers during the days of Queen Elizabeth - Sir Humphrey Gilbert and his half-brother, Sir Walter Raleigh. They conceived the idea, that to destroy the superiority of Spain, England must plant a colony in the New World. Accordingly the former obtained a patent of colonization in 1678, and attempted to establish a settlement in the neighborhood of Newfoundland. The attempt proved futile, and in the effort the noble Gilbert was drowned in the waves of the angry ocean. His last words will ever be kept in precious remembrance: "We are as near heaven by sea as by land." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Carolina Cavalier: A Romance of the American Revolution T is as a romance only that I offer this I book. In using the historic events of a heroic time as a background, and the sentiments of a heroic people as a set ting for my story, I have endeavored to make all my historical references accurate. Beyond that I have attempted nothing of the histo rian's task. I make no pretence of right to invade the domain of that superb scholarship which is just now writing our country's won der-story anew and more worthily than has ever been done before. Patriotism, and an unflinching sense of hon or - love and heroic devotion - these alone are my themes. If I have succeeded in any wor thy degree in illustrating these high virtues and in reflecting the spirit and sentiment of the people among Whom this story is laid, I have accomplished all that I set out to do. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of North America The history of American colonization is to most persons the record of the activities of the Cavalier and the Puritan. Little thought is given to the story of the Dutchmen who strove to create a New Netherland, or to that of the Swedes who warred with the Dutch and the English in the Delaware country, nor, indeed, is much general interest shown in the accounts of the foundation of New Jersey, Delaware, or Maryland. True, there is existent more or less local interest in sectional history, and certain of the sons and daughters of the Middle States, alive to the importance of their section during the period of colonization, have striven to perfect the historical records of their several States and to place a knowledge of them in the hands of the public. But when we sum up this local interest and its effect we find that even in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland public regard for the history of the Middle colonies does not bulk so large as the general, and we may say popular, interest in the history of the colonies of the East and of the South during the early period of their existence. When, therefore, the general reader considers this period, embracing as it does the initial years of American colonization, his mind fastens more often upon Plymouth Rock and Jamestown than upon Manhattan and St. Mary's; and when he studies the advanced or later stage of the period of colonization, it is not to New Haven, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore that he turns, but to Boston and Charleston. First published in 1961 and out of print for several years, Taylor's classic study remains essential to the study of the pre-Civil War South.
