Book Description
When beautiful but tormented juvenile probation officer Christian Vargas discovers that babies are disappearing all over her rural Southeastern Washington State community of the Tri-Cities, she is determined to prove an illegal adoption ring is at work. Her partner, Daniel, has recently been emotionally distant, so instead she woos case information from the notorious playboy and prosecutor, Oz Rellim. A second victim brings back horrifying memories of her own baby’s death. Through Rellim, the intrepid young woman gets clues, as she begins to track the nefarious man responsible for this underworld game of life and death, money, and misogyny. Using the supernatural skills taught her by her Mexican shaman, Christian attempts to stop the kidnapper by posing as a woman wanting to adopt, in this high-stakes game of cat and mouse. “In this energetic third book in the Astrology Mystery series, the story centers on missing children and an illegal adoption ring. The latest installment reunites ambitious, dedicated, motorcycle-riding probation officer Christian Vargas with her ‘charismatic Chicano’ partner, Daniel O’Callahan, both hard on the trail of nefarious human traffickers responsible for three separate child abduction cases. Vargas, ignoring the warnings of the department head who vouched for her on a former tricky case, jumps (secretly) at the chance to participate in yet another investigation … More cleverly plotted suspense reliably anchored by a dogged heroine with verve to spare.” – Kirkus Reviews

The Locked Door: The Secret Room Behind the Kidnap Thriller
Author: Madeleine Watson
Publisher: Madeleine Watson
ISBN: 1651854750
Category : Fiction

Pages : 315
Book Description
This book is about my kidnap thriller, The Locked Door. It is my second of four novels and none are really novels at all but something far more sinister. The idea was confinement. Why, I didn’t know; I just felt a need to express it. Naturally, I made it into a kidnap thriller. During my writing, I connected with this ‘strand’. This strand grew addictive, compulsive, shameful, deathly and creepy. Little did I realize the source of this strand. Not until the age of 51 when I learned something truly terrible about myself. The précis to The Locked Door reads: “This hostage has a secret. “Gemma would appear to have everything: money, a devoted husband, a lively son, and a fulfilling career. But her life takes a nasty turn when she is kidnapped and trapped in an upstairs room by three thugs demanding a huge ransom from her rich father. “In a bid to escape, she cuts a hole in the bedroom floor. From there, Gemma spies on her kidnappers below. That's when their hostage starts playing games with them. That’s when her spying pulls her into a treacherous psychological game that endangers her sanity.” As the story progressed, the captive’s life began to feel as real as mine. She became like an avatar that I would enter when I craved escapism from my otherwise mundane life. With the terrible truth now known, I have analysed The Locked Door. I am appalled at what I have found. This novel appears to possess a shadow novel beneath the apparent one. During the writing, I was completely oblivious to it. In order to convey the intensity of my other world, I have included illustrations and diary excerpts within this account.

The World of Shaft
Author: Steve Aldous
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 147662223X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 266
Book Description
Mention Shaft and most people think of Gordon Parks' seminal 1971 film starring Richard Roundtree in a leather coat, walking the streets of Manhattan to Isaac Hayes' iconic theme music. But the black private dick who inspired the blaxploitation film genre actually made his debut on the printed page as the creation of a white novelist. Ernest Tidyman was a seasoned journalist down on his luck when he decided to try his hand at fiction. Shaft was the result, giving Tidyman the break he was looking for. He went on to become an Academy Award winning screenwriter and respected film producer. Based on extensive research of Tidyman's personal papers, this book tells the story of Shaft from the perspective of his creator. The author provides new insight and analysis of the writing of the Shaft novels, as well as the production of the films and TV series. First-ever coverage of the forgotten Shaft newspaper comic strip includes previously unseen artwork. Also included is Shaft's recent reappearance on the printed page, in both comic book and prose form.
