Book Description
Excerpt from Bud and Bamboo Bud was a Chinese boy. His father had named him Bud because it meant something that grows; a bud grows to be a flower. The boy's father hoped that his son would grow to be a wise man, and hold high Office in China, his beloved country, to the honor of the family name. One day, when Bud was nine years old, his father called him. Come, Bud, he said, you are old enough now to have your hair shaved off, all except one long braid at the back, which you may tie with a blue ribbon. Book Description
Excerpt from The Rose-Bud: A Juvenile Keepsake Madeline did not know that her mother was sick and must soon die and leave her. She was accustomed to her mother's pale, thin cheek, and low weak voice. She did not know how she became paler, thiner and feebler all the time; for she was too young to feel any anxieties of this kind, and she was seldom in doors; liking better to run about the garden and the orchard all the long summer days, where she made companions of the flowers and the trees, than to stay in the house, or even to play with her dolls or read in her books; and Mrs. Grey loved to have her out in the open air, because she thought that if any thing would make her rosy and healthy it was the sweet, pure breath of heaven; for she was as delicate as a snow-drop, or, rather, she might be compared to the little, fragile wind flower. She loved so well - her soft cheek just tinged with pink and her whole figure so slight, so delicate, that it seemed the least rough usage must destroy her. Book Description
Excerpt from The Language of Flowers, With Illustrative Poetry: To Which Is Now First Added, the Calendar of Flowers But little study will be requisite for the science which we teach. Nature has been before us. We must, however, premise two or three rules. When a ower is presented in its natural position, the senti ment is to be understood affirmatively; when re versed, negatively. For instance, a rose-bud, with its leaves and thorns, indicates fear with hope but, if reversed, it must be construed as saying you may neither fear nor hope. Again, divest the same rose-bud of its thorns, and it permits the most sanguine hope; deprive it of its petals, and retain the thorns, and the worst fears may be entertained. The expression of every ower may be thus varied by varying its state or position. The Marigold is emblematical of pain; place it on the head and it signifies trouble of mind; on the heart, the pangs of love; on the bosom, the disgusts of ennui. The pronoun I is expressed by inclining the symbol to the right, and the pronoun than by inclining it to the left.
