Book Description
According to Shoghi Effendi, the Kitab-i-Iqan, the Book of Certitude, should be mastered by every Baha'i and those who are interested in Baha'i Faith. The Book of Certitude was written by Baha'u'llah, the founder of the Baha'i Faith. As one of the main spiritual texts given to humanity, it is complex, intricate, and more beautiful each time it is read. With the help of this new self-study guide by Dr. Sohrab Kourosh, engage with the Book of Certitude on a deeper level than ever before. New meanings, connections, and allusions will become clear and lead you down new paths of spiritual study. Kourosh has compiled a wide range of useful contextual information that identifies more obscure theological, philosophical, and religious terms. He shows the connections to other religious texts and sacred scriptures, and he provides more information about references to historical events. Kourosh also deciphers the references to other Writings of Baha'u'llah, as well as Writings of the Bab, 'Abdu'l-Baha, and Shoghi Effendi, which will help illuminate complex passages. According to the teachings of Baha'u'llah, spiritual texts are of no benefit if they can't be understood. Shoghi Effendi stated that this book should be thoroughly studied. Use this guide to honor His advice.

The materials gathered together in this Study Companion are intended to stimulate study of Bahá'u'lláh's Book of Certitude, the Kitáb-i-Íqán. Shoghi Effendi called the Kitáb-i-Íqán 'Bahá'u'lláh's masterly exposition of the one unifying truth underlying all the Revelations of the past'. Bahá'u'lláh Himself stated that 'all the Scriptures and the mysteries thereof are condensed into this brief account'. The study of this important work of Bahá'u'lláh is vital to an understanding of the basic truths of our Faith. The materials gathered together in this Study Companion are intended to stimulate study of Bahá'u'lláh's Book of Certitude, the Kitáb-i-Íqán. With repeated use in classes, they have evolved over a number of years into their present form, which may be used for both individual and group study. It is intended that these notes will assist the student of the Íqán to acquire a broader vision of its fundamental themes and truths and prove a convenient point of reference for explanations not always at hand. Book Description
Sometimes all we have is the courage of our convictions. But not all convictions are created equal. In fact, some are downright delusional. And once a foolish notion sinks its teeth into the famous or the powerful, look out–the impact can have profound consequences for the rest of us. So it’s nothing short of gratifying when our most bullheaded and self-righteous leading lights insist on getting their way only to be proven egregiously embarrassingly wrong. From politicians to pontiffs, movie stars to moguls, and artists to inventors, Certitude presents short biographical sketches of notoriously stubborn individuals who were certain they were right–with laughable, disturbing, and often disastrous results. Earning a place among the greatest historical and contemporary bullheads are: •Girolamo Savonarola, the Dominican friar who failed to place his own vanities on the bonfire. •Carry A. Nation, the saloon smasher who didn’t have a temperate bone in her teetotaling body. •Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes series, who lacked the deductive reasoning he bestowed on his own creation. •Joseph Stalin, the hard-line Soviet leader who had a soft spot after all. •Madonna, the queen of pop, who isn’t just a material girl: She’s embraced Kabbalah and the doctrine of reincarnation–in other words, she’ll be back! Informative, irreverent, and brilliantly illustrated by the caricaturist Edward Sorel, Certitude is a book for our time.

Book Description
As the Bahá'í community becomes an ever more familiar figure on the international landscape, attention has been increasingly attracted to the teachings of its founder, Bahá'u'lláh. In this groundbreaking study, Nader Saiedi addresses key controversies and problems in the current academic literature about Bahá'u'lláh's writings. Saiedi approaches the subject from sociological, historical, philosophical, spiritual, and theological perspectives and draws on the vast body of previously untranslated original Persian and Arabic texts. Analyzing selected works that represent the three stages of Bahá'u'lláh's revelation, he argues for the conceptual continuity of Bahá'u'lláh's teaching throughout His life, from the inception of His mission in Tehran's Siyah-Chal dungeon to the last books He wrote in exile in Ottoman Palestine. Logos and Civilization is an original and probing investigation of the writings of Bahá'u'lláh, whose visionary insights into the spiritual, social, economic, and political dimensions of humanity in the context of globalization have only begun to attract the attention they merit.

Book Description
The search for belief and meaning among nineteenth-century intellectuals The nineteenth century’s explosion of scientific theories and new technologies undermined many deep-seated beliefs that had long formed the basis of Western society, making it impossible for many to retain the unconditional faith of their forebears. A myriad of discoveries—including Faraday’s electromagnetic induction, Joule’s law of conservation of energy, Pasteur’s germ theory, Darwin’s and Wallace’s theories of evolution by natural selection, and Planck’s work on quantum theory—shattered conventional understandings of the world that had been dictated by traditional religious teachings and philosophical systems for centuries. Fictions of Certitude: Science, Faith, and the Search for Meaning, 1840–1920 investigates the fin de siècle search for truth and meaning in a world that had been radically transformed. John S. Haller Jr. examines the moral and philosophical journeys of nine European and American intellectuals who sought deeper understanding amid such paradigmatic upheaval. Auguste Comte, John Henry Newman, Herbert Spencer, Alfred Russel Wallace, Thomas Henry Huxley, John Fiske, William James, Lester Frank Ward, and Paul Carus all belonged to an age in which one world was passing while another world that was both astounding and threatening was rising to take its place. For Haller, what makes the work of these nine thinkers worthy of examination is how they strove in different ways to find certitude and belief in the face of an epochal sea change. Some found ways to reconceptualize a world in which God and nature coexist. For others, the challenge was to discern meaning in a world in which no higher power or purpose can be found. As explained by D. H. Meyer, “The later Victorians were perhaps the last generation among English-speaking intellectuals able to believe that man was capable of understanding his universe, just as they were the first generation collectively to suspect that he never would.”

Book Description
Supplement for the Seeker of Certitude presents the sections related to worship from Mūsā al-Ḥajjāwī's Zād al-Mustaqni', an abridgment of Ibn Qudāmah's Al-Muqni' that sticks to the school's official position, removing extraneous issues, and adding a few necessary things. The book is extremely terse yet it still manages to present the basics for the school along with issues rarely found in books twice its length. The book was accepted by scholars of the school to such an extent that some said that whoever has memorized it is fit to be a judge. The book continues to be considered essential reading for students of the school, making it a natural choice for presenting the school to English readers. It is more advanced than Ḥanbalī Acts of Worship and it is intended to be read as a supplement to it. The contents of this edition are based on a series of lessons the translator delivered in 2002-2003, with numerous corrections (and only slight editing). The chapters covered in the text include purification, prayer, zakah, fasting, pilgrimage, and jihad. The text includes numerous notes from Manṣūr al-Buhūtī's commentary Al-Rawḍ al-Murbi'.
