Book Description
This fascinating study of early cinema in the Netherlands Indies explores the influences of new media technology on colonial society. The Komedi Bioscoop traces the emergence of a local culture of movie-going in the Netherlands Indies (present-day Indonesia) from 1896 until 1914. It outlines the introduction of the new technology by independent touring exhibitors, the constitution of a market for moving picture shows, the embedding of moving picture exhibitions within the local popular entertainment scene, and the Dutch colonial authorities’ efforts to control film consumption and distribution. Dafna Ruppin focuses on the cinema as a social institution in which technology, race, and colonialism converged. In her illuminating study, moving picture venues in the Indies—ranging from canvas or bamboo tents to cinema palaces of brick and stone—are perceived as liminal spaces in which daily interactions across boundaries could occur within colonial Indonesia’s multi-ethnic and increasingly polarized colonial society.

Habited by various animals and birds unique to this lovely village, the residents for the most part peacefully co- exist with nature. Randhor is replete with adventure and the mystery of the mundane but interwoven with the influence of the Ramayana. Tales of Randhor will delight as it skillfully leads the reader through its various stories by portraying different facets of village life, long forgotten by many. For instance, the story "Motor Car Comes to Randhor", gleefully highlights the reactions of the villagers when Motilal decides to buy an automobile. The story, "Modern Medicine" focuses on the tug of war in the minds of the residents who have to now choose between the young doctor's allopathic medicines and the medicine man's ancient wisdom of healing with the help of plants and herbs native to Randhor. And what about the story of the monkeys? They sure outnumber the people in the village. Yet for a while their future is not certain as they are prone to mischief and frequently annoy the village folk. These stories and others will give the reader an insight into the everyday lives and adventures of the simple and fun-loving residents of Randhor. And at the end of it, perhaps you will want to take a trip to Randhor yourself, at least in your mind's eye, and re-imagine the way these village folk live in this peaceful Shangri La.

Book Description
In A Very Old Machine, Sudhir Mahadevan shows how Indian cinema's many origins in the technologies and practices of the nineteenth century continue to play a vital and broad function in its twenty-first-century present. He proposes that there has never been a singular cinema in India; rather, Indian cinema has been a multifaceted phenomenon that was (and is) understood, experienced, and present in everyday life in myriad ways. Employing methods of media archaeology, close textual analysis, archival research, and cultural theory, Mahadevan digs into the history of photography, print media, practices of piracy and showmanship, and contemporary everyday imaginations of the cinema to offer an understanding of how the cinema came to be such a dominant force of culture in India. The result is an open-ended and innovative account of Indian cinema's "many origins."
