From his first entrance into college, how ever, he was influenced by a steady ambition, and throughout his three years' term always maintained a conspicuous position, which was crowned, on his graduation in 1808, with a high and welldeserved honora distinction. His first instruction in classical literature, while under t e care of Dr. Staughton, had not been profound, but his tastes and habits, which had imbued him from his earliest youth with a strong love of reading, and induced him ardently to cultivate general literature and history, awakened in him a love for the great masters of Grecian and Roman poetry and eloquence, which increased in the progress of collegiate studies, and has been nourished and igdu] ed among the busy occupations of subsequent life. Under the care of resident Smith, a gentleman of accomplished manners, and a scholar who, with many elegant and varied attainments; had especially cultivated, and ably and successful] explained the moral and mental sciences; and of Dr. John m'lean, t e professor of chemistry and natural philosophy, who com bined the Doric simplicity of his countryman Burns with the same spi rit of accurate and searching inquiry into the truths of experimental science which had largely contributed to the fame of Professor Black, whose pupil in Scotland he had been, Mr. Coxe acquired, while at Princeton, a fondness for every branch of study and reflection con.
