Book Description
Excerpt from The Bible in the Pacific I beg here to Offer my warmest acknowledgments to all my beloved brethren who have assisted me in my work. In every instance, with a solitary exception, my application has met with a hearty response, and much interest has been expressed in the work, and many encouraging words have been Spoken which have been highly appreciated. And while acknowledging Obligations to helpers, I wish especially to name the valuable service which my life long friend and fellow-labourer, the Rev. Dr. Turner, has rendered in editing the work as it has passed through the press, and which is the third service of the kind which he and Mrs. Turner have rendered me within a few years. To them therefore I owe a very large debt of gratitude. May the Master whom we serve amply recompense them. And to another esteemed brother, the Rev. S. M. Creagh, I am also under special obligations. He, in addition to furnishing information relative to translation work on the Loyalty Islands, has read over the manuscript with me, and in that way has rendered very valuable help. Book Description
Excerpt from The Bible in the Pacific The work now offered to the friends of Bible circulation and Christian missions originated with the Rev. H. T. Robjohns, B.A., one of the agents of the British and Foreign Bible Society for the Australian Colonies and New Zealand. An idea occurred to Mr. Robjohns, which, put into words, would be in substance as follows: - "Here we are on the borders of the great Pacific Ocean, on the islands and groups scattered over the bosom of which a work of Bible translation and circulation has been in progress for over half a century; how desirable it seems that, while we have amongst us men who have personally taken part in that work, steps should be taken for the production of a connected history of a work of such vital importance to the welfare of man, and the glory of the God of the Bible." Mr. Robjohns mentioned his idea to my esteemed friend and fellow-labourer in the Pacific, the Rev. W. W. Gill, B.A. Mr. Gill, while highly approving of Mr. Robjohns' proposal that such a work should be undertaken, did not see his own way clear to undertake it, but suggested that I should be applied to. Book Description
Excerpt from The Pacific Expositor, 1861, Vol. 2 It is by free, sovereign grace we are saved. There was no Medi ator to be found, but God's dear Son. He only was fitted to stand between God and sinners, and make them to be at one. And it so pleased the Father to give his Son - he did not spare his own Son, but freely gave him to die for us - and gave him with all fulness dwelling in him, that he might make peace through his cross, and reconcile all things unto himself. The great work of God's Son, was to lay the foundation of our peace with God. Accordingly he Offered himself apropiatory sacrifice for our sins. He who knew no sin, was made sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness Of God in him. On the cross we see the expiatory victim, the meritorious ground of peace. God is just, and yet the justifier of them that believe in Jesus, by whom peace is preached, and pardon is offered. God in Christ is reconciling the world unto himself, and hath given unto us the word of reconciliation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from To the Pacific and Back These letters were commenced as we started on our trip across the continent, with no idea of their continuance, but they met with favor at home, and the pleasure of sharing with my children the im pressions stamped upon my own mind by the various scenes that we passed through, and the relief afforded to the monotony of many an other wise weary hour, induced me to persevere. Upon our return we found that all of the little penciled leaves had been kept intact, but were exceedingly inconvenient for ready reference; hence their appearance in this form, supplemented by some of my husband's letters, which fill gaps occurring in my own, portions referring to merely personal matters being omitted. I dedicate this little volume to my children, to whom the letters were originally addressed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Bible, the Book of Mankind: A Paper Read at the World's Bible Congress Held at the Panama-Pacific Exposition, San Francisco, Cal;, August 1-4, 1915 We are told nowadays, it is true, that there never were any Dark Ages. We rejoice that it is possible to paint them darker than they were. It is very largely a matter of point of sight. Christendom has never known a time, let us thank'god for it, when the Bible was out of mind; when its teaching was not widely diffused and was not powerfully operative in the lives of men. There were schools in the Dark Ages, and the Bible was in a very true sense the text-book of these schools. There were libraries in the capitals, in the universities, in the monasteries - and the Bible was to be had in these libraries. There were scriptoria, and the Bible was dili gently copied in these scriptoria. A beginning was made already in the eighth century of translating the Bible into the vernacular languages, and by the end of the Middle Ages it was accessible to Frenchmen and Ger mans, Englishmen and Bohemians, Spaniards and Italians and Poles in their own tongues. Nearly two hundred manuscripts of the German Bible and almost as many of the English from this later period remain to-day to attest the wideness of their use. Printing came in the midst of the fif teenth century and W. A. Copinger catalogues a hundred and forty-four editions of the Latin Bible for its first half century; and for the sixteenth century no fewer than four hundred and thirty-eight.
