Based on original research, this monograph is the first to portray the fascinating life of Bernhard Pollack (1865-1928), a pioneer neurohistologist, ophthalmologist, and world-class pianist. In doing so, it revives important scientists and musicians of fin-du-si cle Berlin. Pollack wrote the first standard reference on the staining methods for the nervous system (1897). Born into a Prussian-Jewish family, he received his piano education from Moritz Moszkowski and his pathology education from Carl Weigert. Pollack worked at the Institutes of W. Waldeyer (anatomy), E. Mendel (neuropsychiatry), Nobel laureate R. Koch (infectious diseases), and the Eye Clinic of P. Silex, before becoming Professor of Ophthalmology at Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universit t in 1919. English translations of two articles by Pollack, on musical memory and on Moszkowski, are included. The book also chronicles the founding by Pollack of the Berliner rzte-Orchester, who in 2011 celebrate their centennial.

The prevalence of allergic diseases has increased dramatically over recent decades, both in terms of the number of sufferers and the number of allergies. Szent-Gyorgy, Science 1964) The first edition of this book, published in German as Tabak abhiingigkeit in 2001, was prompted by the fact that no single volume was available in Germany or elsewhere summarising the adverse repercussions of cigarette smoking on human health. As far as my own research was able to ascertain, the last comprehensive work dealing with this subject was writ ten in Germany by the Dresden internist, F. Lickint, whose Tabak und Organismus was published in 1939 by the Hip pokrates-Verlag. All subsequent monographs in this field have tended to focus on detailed aspects, and there has been no shortage of publications on subjects such as how smokers can quit smoking, healthy eating for smokers etc. Friends and colleagues abroad have urged me to prepare an English language version of Tabakabhiingigkeit. In gladly complying with this suggestion, I have intentionally prepared an up dated and slightly enlarged new edition, taking account of the rapidly proliferating literature on the subject up to the start of 2002. The harmful sequelae of smoking are played down by politicians in many industrialised countries, including Ger many.

This book brings together 55 of the most common eponyms related to the neurological examination, neuroanatomy, and neurological diseases. The chapters have a uniform structure: a short biography, a discussion of and a quotation from the original publication, and a discussion of the subsequent evolution and significance of the eponym. Photographs of all but two of the eponymists have been included. The material is organized into sections on anatomy and pathology, symptoms and signs, reflexes and tests, clinical syndromes, and diseases and defects. The selection of eponyms was based on the frequency of use, familiarity of clinical neurologists with the concept, and the significance within neurology of the individual who coined the eponym.
