Excerpt from The Avery Collection of the Postage Stamps of the World I did nothing more in stamps until about 1878 when I commenced again with Lincoln's album, and was fortunate enough to fill up most of the blank spaces, and had a very good number of rare stamps. I was. However, very disgusted with this style of collecting when I paid a visit to the Birmingham Philatelic Society and saw the method of arranging stamps on hinges and classifying perforations, and I finally decided, about 1887, to sell my collection again. I sold some portion, but as I saw some of the rarities go I changed my mind and began again with a good Senf album. As I filled up one country after another I began removing these into special albums. I had the opportunity of buying a good special collection of Australian stamps belonging to Mr. Bullock, of Australia, and added the Australian stamps I had before to these, and so made it into a much stronger and more perfect collection. Excerpt from Postage Stamps and Their Collection, Vol. 1 Of the many advantages to be derived from a hobby of some sort it seems hardly necessary to speak, but a few words may be said on the hobby of stamp collecting, which by many, nowadays, has been reduced to a science. Intelligent collecting of anything - stamps, coins, books, objects of art, or the like - is to be commended, whether a man confines himself by force of circumstances or choice, to a limited field, or whether he feels at liberty and induced to cover a larger territory. And this commendation of stamp collecting is due not only because of the solace and enjoyment that it gives a man, tired by the days duties, but also to the increase in knowledge of history, geography, and politics, which march hand in hand with his increasing interest in the technical side of his subject. On the other side, there are two kinds of collecting to be deprecated; the mere striving for numbers or amount; and the purchase of stamps from a purely mercenary point of view. Of the special school to be followed in collecting stamps, each collector must take his own choice, being governed by his means and desires. However, it is safe to say that he is a courageous man who, today, starts out to make a general collection of stamps from the first, even along narrow lines. Specializing is becoming, if it has not already become, the order of the day, and in stamp collecting this is almost inevitable to a greater or lesser degree. From the mere law of supply and demand, this specializing is obviously bound to increase as time goes on. To the stamp collecting public commendation of this little book and its author seems almost superfluous. As a close student of stamps for many years, not only in business, but as a collector, Mr. Colson is admirably fitted to write on die subject he has chosen. Excerpt from A Comprehensive Catalogue of the Postage Stamps of the United States of America No reference is made as to postmarks, though in some of the earlier issues Carrier, Steamboat and Paid Cancellations are decidedly rare, as also those shewing year dates. Again certain stamps on entire envelopes are of greater value than if detached, a notable example being the 900. Of 1869 which is priced at 3 in the catalogues, but for which the writer (who has yet to see one) has heard of an offer of 20 to purchase a fine copy on entire! The colour of the obliterating ink may also have a marked effect on the value, green for instance being very scarce in the 1847 Issue. No Imperforate or part perforated varieties of stamps that are normally perforated are treated as varieties, except where such are beyond suspicion owing to their being found in pairs or blocks; and double or misplaced perforations are not listed, though they are frequently met with and probably exist in every issue.
