Excerpt from The Art of William Morris: A Record Hough it was not my intention to write a preface, circumstances have made it necessary that I should do so. In the first place I wish it to be noticed that I chose purposely to call my book The Art of William Morris so as to show that it makes no claim to be a biography nor a record of any of his private and family affairs. Such a work I was neither asked nor authorized to write. It is true, of course, that I had the privilege of knowing the late Mr. Morris personally - from the year 1883 onwards until his death. At the same time I submit that, with two Or three very trifling exceptions, I have not introduced into the book any details of his life which were not already common property - which could not just as well have been strung together by any one who knew where to find the scattered references in Mr. Morris's own writings, and in various other publications, without ever having met Mr. Morris face to face; nor more than such as were necessary to link together the contents of the book in some sort of consecutive order.
