Daniel, with an Introduction to Apocalyptic Literture is Volume XX of The Forms of the Old Testament Literature, a series that aims to present a form-critical analysis of every book and each unit in the Hebrew Bible. Fundamentally exegetical, the FOTL volumes examine the structure, genre, setting, and intention of the biblical literature in question. They also study the history behind the form-critical discussion of the material, attempt to bring consistency to the terminology for the genres and formulas of the biblical literature, and expose the exegetical process so as to enable students and pastors to engage in their own analysis and interpretation of the Old Testament texts. In his introduction to Jewish apocalyptic literature, John J. Collins examines the main characteristics and discusses the setting and intention of apocalyptic literature. Collins begins his discussion of Daniel with a survey of the book's anomalies and an examination of the bearing of form criticism on them. He goes on to discuss the book's place in the canon and the problems with its coherence and bilingualism. Collins's section-by-section commentary provides a structural analysis (verse-by-verse) of each section, as well as discussion of its genre, setting, and intention. The book includes bibliographies and a glossary of genres and formulas that offers concise definitions with examples and bibliography.

This text, written in Coptic, dates from the crusader period, a little after 1187 AD, and is extant in Ms. Paris, BNF copte. 58. It was published by Woide, Appendix ad editionem N. T. graeci e codici Alexandrino, Oxford, 1799, and translated into French by Frédéric Macler in 1896. The journal is online here, although non-US viewers must currently use an anonymizer in order to access it. In the manuscript which transmits the text to us, the book of Daniel appears, divided into thirteen "visions." It is then followed by this text, called the "Fourteenth vision."

As a response to Daniel’s prayer for the restoration of God’s city and sanctuary, “The Seventy Sevens” oracle of Dan 9:24–27 gives further details of the overarching apocalyptic vision of ch. 7. After establishing how the canonical apocalyptic visions of Daniel and Revelation constitute a unique genre that gives a teleological-eschatological-apocalyptic perspective, this study demonstrates how a typological reading of the text best perceives the revelation and interprets the message presented in Daniel’s apocalyptic vision. The vision and oracle together depict God’s eschatological agents of judgment and salvation. The one like a son of man, the Messiah Prince, is given all authority, power, and the eternal kingdom. The “Seventy Sevens” oracle, as the only Old Testament passage to depict two comings of the Messiah, puts greatest emphasis on the time between his comings for the building of God’s eternal kingdom-city. After God’s eternal kingdom-city is built up and expanded throughout the world, God initiates desolations of judgment, first by withdrawing the reign of the Messiah, and then by allowing a “prince to come”—the eschatological enemy, the “little horn” of ch. 7 and “desolator” of ch. 9—to cause further desolations, even giving the saints of the Most High into the enemy’s hand for “times, time, and half a time.” After the necessary desolations God will bring final judgment on the desolator himself and fulfill his eschatological goals to consummate the restoration of his creation.

Excerpt from Visions of the End: A Study in Daniel and Revelation The limits of the book have also made it impossible to do more than hint at another matter which deserves attention. I believe it capable of proof that cataclysm and immediate intervention by God are not essential to the apocalyptic scheme of thought. Daniel and revelation, however, which alone are dealt with here, undoubtedly teach both and it would have been intolerable to devote Space to a subject which is absent from the authors with whom this volume professes to deal. But it seems clear to me that some of the prophets were moving or even had moved to the thought of evolution rather than that of cataclysm. What the apocalyptic conception as to immediate intervention meant to these men was that the eternal order was at hand - there was a door open into Heaven always. With this view goes the recognition that we have not the right to conclude from certain of our Lord's words to His belief in an instant cataclysmic revolution. It is a pleasure to acknowledge my debt to Dr. J. H. Leckie for his help in connection with this book.
